Two guards stepped in and peeled Cassie off the floor, steering her firmly toward the door. "Erin! I hope you rot in hell! You let this happen! You watched and did nothing!" Her voice echoed through the hallway, getting smaller and smaller until it was gone. I turned and walked to the floor-to-ceiling window. Below me, the city moved and hummed, all traffic and light and people with somewhere to be. The afternoon sun came in without apology, burning off the last shadow that previous life had left behind.

(Maya) I go through everything twice. I was so sure I’d find a tracker in the bag somewhere, inside bunny. But there’s nothing so far. Lucy’s diaper bag sits open on the table. Her blanket folded neatly beside it. Bunny laid on his back, ears flopped, already opened and resewn. Every pocket. Every seam. Every inch of fabric. Nothing. I sit back, my hands flat on the table. Stepping closer in the direction of the sound, I lowered my gun when I saw a small bunny. As it saw me, it scattered away. I shook my head. “It was probably just the wind that blew off an old branch,” I muttered to myself. Just as I turned to return to the cabin, a sharp pain shot through my head then everything turned black. ***

The corridor outside the Moon Hall was almost empty when I finally forced myself to leave. My shoes clicked softly against the marble floor; every step echoed like a reminder that I was walking alone now. The torches burned low along the walls, throwing long stripes of gold and shadow across the floor. I was halfway to the guest wing when a low voice came from the dark corner near the stairwell. “You shouldn’t cry over scum like him, bunny.” I stopped. The word bunny caught me first…soft, teasing, completely unfamiliar. I turned slowly.

They were out there somewhere, and I wasn’t stopping until I found them. Outside, on the path leading to the woods, my heart nearly stopped when I saw it—Jackson’s stuffed bunny lying on the ground. It was half-covered in dirt, its little ears bent, but there was no mistaking it. I knelt and picked it up, my hand trembling slightly as I brushed the dirt off. The soft fabric was warm from the fire grazing the nearby houses, but it filled me with a cold dread. They’d been here. Jackson had dropped this. They were alive... but with whom?

It's not right. It's not fair. It makes me mad. And for the first time, I contemplate killing someone. My own mate. And yet, I don't move. I just stay here, huddled in a corner, like a pathetic whelp. Maybe he was right. Maybe I am truly weak and pathetic. I can't even defend myself.
