I wondered. I walked slowly towards the window with my arms wrapped around me. I grabbed the window handles to pull them back to close it but I stopped midway when I noticed the lights next door. Who could that be? The house beside us was empty for over a year. I squinted and could actually see the inside of the room through the window adjoining mine. Like seriously, I could strangle the guy who constructed these houses like that. So damn close! Anyway, we finally got some new neighbours. What an odd time to move in though, I couldn't help but think. I just hope they would be nice. My parents could have some pals.

Just as l was staring, Alecia all of the sudden hooked her arm into mine and tugged me past them and into the house next door. John wasn't lying when he said it was a small party. It was nothing like ours from last night. There were literally less than twenty people here and most of them stayed in their own little groups. "John", Alecia beamed but while pulling me to him. It was a young couple, in fact they appeared to be very young and wide-eyed innocents. They thanked me and disappeared into their room. The group of men froze in confusion. "What do you mean? A month ago, didn't a young woman move in here?" one of them asked. "She looks like this!" Another held up a photo of me. The neighbor squinted at the image and nodded. "I've seen her. She lived in the next building over. But ever since her husband died, I haven't seen her. Are you her friends?" The men immediately sensed something was off. Grabbing the neighbor, they pressed him for answers.

She expressed and I bobbed my head. “Well, that’s true. Why is this place deserted? Are you the only one that stays on this estate?” I looked around and asked when I noticed that even the birds chirping in the area could be counted. “Yeah, I’m not the only one living here, I have one neighbour, a very sweet old couple but they are on vacation.” She informed. “Oh, so you two are the only ones living on this street?” I furrowed my eyebrows.

I couldn't understand why my friend said the man looked familiar, but then I realized it was Joe, my neighbor and Lesley's husband. Sometimes we would travel together, and I would post our group pictures online, so it wasn't surprising that my friend recognized him. Seeing the way they acted around each other, it didn't seem like they had only just gotten close the night before. When did it all start? After they left, I got out of the car and installed surveillance at home, then checked the trash in the bedroom. My fist tightened in anger when I saw what was in there.

And why did it feel like she’d just brushed against something dangerous enough to destroy her? She unlocked her apartment with trembling fingers and stepped inside, leaning back against the door once it shut. Her chest rose and fell too fast as she tried to steady herself. This was ridiculous. He was just a neighbor. A rich, arrogant neighbor with an unsettling presence. Nothing more. Yet, even as she told herself that, she couldn’t shake the feeling that she had already been noticed in a way she couldn’t undo.
