I will pull up my big girl panties and enjoy this neighborhood party. Maybe they have a single friend. A neighbor could be a single male. It might be fun to practice being normal around guys. It might be interesting to carry on a conversation. It's been too long since I could look them in the eyes and smile. I was a natural at it before John. It must be like riding a bike, right? As Kennedy pulls from the driveway, I ask, “How many neighbors will attend tonight?” She tells me, “We invited three couples.” Couples mean no single guys.

I walked into the kitchen with my mother trailing behind me. "Glad you're finally getting to relate." My dad called from behind. I tried not to roll my eyes. If relating meant being locked up in a cupboard then I didn't want to. I entered my room and shut the curtains. The last thing I wanted to see was anything related to the house Nextdoor. As I collapsed on my bed, my eyes caught a simple lemon stick on notes plastered on my window. Curiously, I tiptoed to the window and peeled it off. Instinctively, I raised my eyes to the room opposite mine and saw someone looking at me with an amused expression on his face. It took me some minutes to recognize him.

Then the doorbell rang. I opened the door to find Arielle and her mother. 'Oh no. She's here to confront me,' I thought. "Sorry to bother you," Arielle's mother said. "We just moved in next door." Still rattled, I answered, "Hello. I'm Neil Gates." "Here's the thing—I have to go on a business trip for a week. My daughter… isn't quite right in the head." She tapped her temple. "Could you possibly look after her? I'd really appreciate it."

At the far end of the hall, their new neighbor’s door was cracked open—just enough to spill voice, laughter, and music into the hallway like an invitation and a warning at the same time. Her mother sighed. “Oh great. Party neighbors.” Ruby wasn’t listening. Her eyes had caught something—someone. A boy stepped out onto the balcony next door, the one directly connected by only a narrow wall to the balcony of their new apartment. The dying sunlight caught him perfectly: messy black hair, silver chain glinting, a confident, careless way he leaned over the railing. He laughed at something someone said behind him, but his eyes slid up for a split second—meeting Ruby’s.

I couldn't help but smile in that moment, and I looked up to see his face just as the spotlight shifted away from us. Wrong timing! "My name is Kent, and I'm your neighbor," I heard his name, but I couldn't understand his last words due to the loud music. I simply nodded so he wouldn't notice that I was getting lost in my own thoughts again.

The man's hands were busy replying to someone's message. "No need." Raisa looked up at her husband. Arka kissed his wife's lips affectionately. "There's already someone living next door to us." Raisa released their lips. Arka squinted. "Really?" Raisa nodded, then smiled. "I plan to visit there later." "It's not bad that we have neighbors. I haven't had neighbors for a long time." continued Raisa. Arka nodded slowly. Her gaze focused on the cell phone that had been busy ringing. Raisa chose to remain silent, she wasn't curious.

The next morning, as Trent stood in front of the kitchen window drinking his coffee, he debated whether or not to close the blinds. He looked across the yard towards his neighbor’s house. It appeared empty. With a small shrug, he decided to keep the blinds as they were. She had probably got bored of watching him at that point. He was something new. Trent understood that, just as he knew he wasn’t the most exciting person.

We ate on the couch, legs touching, shoulders brushing, feeding each other bites like it was the most natural thing in the world. “So,” I said, sipping my drink, “what does one do on their first official couple day?” He grinned. “Everything. Slowly.” We walked hand in hand through the neighborhood, stopping for coffee, laughing at nothing, stealing glances like teenagers. At the grocery store, he leaned in and whispered, “Do couples argue about brands or is that later?” I laughed. “Later. We’re still in the cute phase.” He smiled. “Good. I plan to enjoy this phase excessively.”

Jai was sleeping soundly with Adira in his arms.
