We moved parallel to them, like two ghosts trailing two flickering candles, maintaining a precarious distance in the absolute dark. Slowly, agonizingly, the density of the blackness thinned. The harsh lines of the trees softened, the edges of the path became defined, and the world began to bleed back into existence. Darkness faded, and we could see everywhere clearly now, the muted colors of the dawn filtering through the leaves. Morning came, and so, the duty that brought us out. The time for silent evasion was over, replaced by the grim, undeniable necessity of confrontation.

The Darkness called out from its blockade beyond the hills where I sat south. I clenched my fists, digging my nails into my palms. The Darkness's voice echoed a constant, insidious whisper in my mind. It promised relief, an end to the torment. But I knew better. I had seen the horrors it could unleash, the twisted, broken souls it left in its wake. I had to ignore the Darkness for another twelve hours before the ritual was over as that was how long the first one was, and the Darkness had lost. I had to do this for my twins and to ruin some version of the Cult's plan to kill them and change the realm.
