“Those.” Lauren stopped walking then. She heard Phil Collins’s “In the Air Tonight” blasting over the speaker at the top of the Himalaya ride, drowning out the screams of the riders. The scent of cotton candy filled her nose, sickly sweet. Her body felt stiff, clutched with some unidentifiable emotion. She crouched down to look David in the eye. “David. Are you telling me that Dad is . . . is . . .” She couldn’t get the words out. The inside of her lungs felt like they were frozen over. A ghost? A ghost walking around next to David, talking to him?

At night, Caden habitually slept on the inner side of the bed. Half-asleep, he instinctively reached out to pull someone close. His hand met a soft, compliant body. Cassandra nestled obediently against him, carrying the faint, carefully chosen scent of elegant perfume. But something wasn't right. The warmth was off. It lacked that vibrant, fiery heat. The scent was off. It didn't have that subtly sweet, natural fragrance. Even the subtle rhythm of her breathing in sleep felt off.

With a trembling voice, she called out, "Is somebody there? Please, is there anyone in this place?" Her pleas echoed through the dark room, filling the silence. However, there was no response, only the distant echo of her own words. Loneliness and fear enveloped her even more, fueling her need to find a way out and discover the truth behind her mysterious confinement. "Please! I want to get out of here." Footsteps echoed through the halls again, making Meg shudder. Then a male voice cut the silence, full of authority and menace, "Shut up, or you'll regret it."

We won. Twenty-one nights that started with revenge and ended with redemption. Tomorrow, we make it official. Tomorrow, we begin forever. If we survive one more night. "Good." We were still playing with Luxious' collection of games in the middle of the night. We both used to do that. He'll suddenly wake me up in my room whenever he's bored and ask me to play with him. Everyone in the mansion is asleep, so the hallway is already dark, with the exception of Luxious's room, which is still well-lit. We're making noise because the two of us won't stop arguing as usual.
