Sunlight poured through the windows so that the library was well illuminated, combined with the flickering light of the fire crackling in the hearth. He paused on the bottom step, closed his eyes and shook his head, and when he looked again, the hearth was empty and cold. He took two tentative steps forward, calling Phantom’s name, when the cat suddenly leapt on top of the nearest bookcase. It hissed again, its entire body shook as if in the grips of a seizure and it toppled off the bookcase, landing on its back, belying the old myth. With a yowl, it took off toward the fireplace.

I muttered, and pushed inside. The air was warm and book-heavy, dust motes turning slowly like they had all the time in the world. Wood floors. Narrow aisles. A fat gray cat slept on a fortress of battered hardbacks, one paw draped over the spine of a poet who’d died beautifully. Somewhere deeper in the stacks, a kettle clicked off. “Be right with you,” a woman called, Irish tucked under the words like a secret. “Mind the first table. It bites browsers who brag.”

“God, Jo, you’re going to college, not a convent. Loosen the fuck up before you die alone with your cat.” “I don’t even have a cat,” I muttered. “Exactly my point,” she shot back, savage as ever. “You don’t have a cat, you don’t have a man, you don’t have a life. I gritted my teeth, clutching my cup again. “At least books don’t get drunk and embarrass themselves at parties.” Kelly clutched her pearls—if she’d been wearing any. “Oh my God. Everyone turned around at once. The neighbor’s cat was sitting there. Very fat. Very satisfied. And apparently responsible for the entire potato catastrophe. For a few seconds, no one said a word. Then Noah slowly lowered the baseball bat. “We were terrorized by a potato cat.” The cat meowed aggressively.

She decided it was time to bring some order to the room. “I am Katalea. I am the alpha of the Freedom Pride and Dakari here is my mate.
