She was good at it now, the way she was good at the things she had done consistently for five years, the way you got good at anything when you did it consistently and with full attention. She had named the fear of the city. The fear of the closed door. The fear at four in the morning before the wedding. She had named the fear to her supervisor and to Priya and to him, in the kitchen and in cars and in the dark at three in the morning when it arrived without warning. She was good at naming fears. This one she had been holding back from naming

They sat across from me and looked at the desk and then at me with the specific quality of a four-year-old who has been thinking about something for longer than four-year-olds usually thought about things. "You were afraid when you were building all of it," they said. Not a question. "Yes," I said. "Not all the time," they said, reading the accuracy of their own statement through the bond-network. "But often." "Often," I confirmed. They considered this. "I am not afraid," they said. "Rin is not afraid. We do not know what we have not encountered yet and the not-knowing should produce fear but it does not." They looked at me. "Why?"

Fear. It's a word with many meanings. Some say people fear what they don't know because they are oblivious to what lies within. Others say people fear what they know because they have seen how scary it can get. For me? It's The unknown. I fear Dave, I fear what his reaction is going to be to my outburst, and with every second he spends looking at me in shock, I grow even more scared. “What did you just say?” he finally spoke. I trembled. “W..what?” I stuttered.

James leaned back slightly, absorbing the words, feeling their weight. This was no longer subtle maneuvering. This was fear. Raw and spreading.

I have been fooled for so many years ago and I’m ashamed for what I’ve done. I am a sinful mortal not worthy of his forgiveness. My mind felt slow, clogged with fear. I'm as small as an ant, as big as a whale. I'll approach like a breeze, but can come like a gale. By some I get hit, but all have shown fear. I'll dance to the music, though I can't hear. Of names I have many, of names I have one. I'm as slow as a snail, but from me you can't run. The words swirled in my head, a confusing poem in the flickering candlelight. Something that could be big or small… something that comes gently or with force… something people fear and can’t escape.

And something else. Fear.

She stayed seated, hands folded loosely in front of her. “You keep using the word uncertainty,” Lillian said. “But that isn’t what’s happening.” A few heads tilted. “What you’re experiencing,” she continued, “is fear.” The word landed cleanly. No qualifiers. No apology. She let it sit. “This isn’t fear of failure,” she said. “The data doesn’t support that. And it isn’t fear of instability. The systems are holding.” She paused, eyes moving slowly around the table. “It’s fear of irrelevance.”

But Evelyn had learned to read the silence between his words. “We need to move soon,” he said finally, not looking up. Evelyn turned slightly. “Why?” “They’ll return. And next time, it won’t be five.” She nodded. “Let them come. I’m not afraid.” “You should be.” He paused the sharpening, meeting her gaze. “Fear isn’t weakness, Evelyn. It’s a warning.” She leaned against the wooden railing. “I’ve lived in fear for too long. Fear of rejection, fear of failure, fear of not being good enough. I’m done with it.”
