Hearing the whistle the animal stopped its snarling, let the fabric fall from its jaw and sat staring at the frightened girl waiting for its next set of orders. “Fear is a crippling thing. It causes us to lose focus and panic, our only concern is fight or flight instincts. We forget how to think logically and rationally. It makes us prey, and what lovely prey you are my dear.” The cold voice spoke from the shadows of the night, sending her fear into overdrive.

But standing in that hall, in foreign soil, I finally understood my father's words. Fear is the deadliest weapon in existence, because it doesn't always arrive with a warning. Most of the time, it settles quietly in your chest, making every breath feel like the last one. That was how it felt as I stood before my people, before cameras and foreign leaders, knowing that something had gone terribly wrong. I always thought I was smarter than the people around me, but I was an idiot all along.
