More bookshelves covered the walls in front of her with an open hallway in the center. Sean interrupted her viewing to tell her to look at the middle shelf to the right. Laying flat, one on top of the other were two beautiful photo books, with candles on each side. She went to pick up the large photo album, forgetting about her hand, when Sean picked it up and placed it on the desk. She opened the first page and saw the foundation of this place, with a picture of the boys and Sean. A note below it said. “We are your foundation. We will always be here to build you up. Love, Your guys, forever.”

I said. Ian studied me for a long moment, then finally nodded, a flicker of relief in his eyes. “Good. Because you’ll need that fire.” --- That night, I sat at my desk with the envelope in front of me, staring at the single sentence again and again. *Stay focused. Do not give in.* But another question gnawed at me: focused on what? On Ian? On surviving his stepbrother’s games? On proving myself? Or was it something deeper—staying focused on *who I am*, even as the world around me tried to twist and reshape me?

Personally, I want to see what's in that book. I'd spent yet another evening thinking about her. She's the first thing in life that had taken my focus off the endgame, which is not exactly a good thing. I didn't make provisos for being sidetracked because until one day ago, I didn't think there was anything that could sway me from my path. But something about her situation keeps pulling at me, and I know I won't rest until I get to the bottom of this shit.

Let the people investigate on their own. “Funny story, Sebastian, the headline stated that I was an orphan. I want to let everyone know that I have a loving mother and a whole lot of people supporting and loving me behind the scenes.” I glanced at Ellie and smiled at her. She smiled back and waved her hand at me. “Regarding my father, honestly I don't care where on the earth the man is. He's absent my whole life and I don't think I have to acknowledge him anymore. So I really don't get the point why this anonymous person, who published the article, keeps bringing him up. This same person tormented me ever since I tied a knot, and right now it feels like I'm living rent-free inside her head.”

This person provided a ton of key info just to bring down their competitor. And that person's last name was Carver. After thanking the police, I left the station. On the way home, I remembered a weird phone call I'd gotten once. The number was unfamiliar, and all I could hear on the other end was muffled sobbing. I lifted my head and looked up at the blazing sun. Its warmth washed over me. "What do you feel like eating today, babe?" Julian asked, his eyes crinkled into a smile. "Anything you make will be perfect," I said.

Instead, he went full public with Molly—traveling, showing off, livestreaming their so-called "love." Felt like I was watching two totally separate plotlines from a cheesy drama. While they were toasting new deals and having candlelit dinners, I was in the lab, debugging robotics software. While they shopped and ate at influencer hotspots, I was knee-deep in wires, trying to fix a bot that wouldn't stop glitching. While they partied and got drunk, posting their "relationship goals" online and soaking up the likes, I hit a breakthrough—a whole new approach.

And I open it randomly. The words on the page blur together. I will try reading one paragraph. Then I read it again. Still nothing sinks in. I let out a breath and dropped the book back onto the desk. This is not me. Since school I have always been disciplined. My friends even used to joke that I take life seriously. I never minded that label. To me focus is the way to achieve something. Now that focus is gone. I know exactly why. Rachel. Just her name is enough to throw my thoughts into chaos.
