Now she stood on a boat with Khepri deity, goddess of rebirth and the sun's journey, and Thoth, maintainer of the universe, and judge of the dead. Her mother had told her about the land of the dead and stories of these two and the many,many souls they had led to their final descent or ascent. She felt overwhelmed.

She bowed her head slightly. “You must tell us at once. The cause of the death.” Draven noted sharply. “Yes, Sire.” She stepped forward to where to dead bodies lay. And after a while of sniffing and pouring weird sand, she stood up to face us. “This isn’t a natural death. It’s a verdict from the goddess.”

Jessa smiled at them, but I instantly noted the stress lines and the way they clenched their hands. “What happened?” I asked, standing. Cassian moved to Jessa’s side and put an arm around her shoulders. “An Omega named Gilmore was found dead an hour ago. No sign of injury except for a symbol drawn into his forehead with blood. Quinn found the body. He says he’s done research, and it’s a symbol of the ancient goddess of Juno.” “Juno?” Jessa repeated, her eyes widening. Jarek took over. “She was apparently a goddess of mothers and maternity as well as a war goddess that brought death and destruction. The month of Jessa is named for her.”

He smirks, “Hecate.” She turns to Ash and Kai on the sofa and holds out her hand, “Pleased to meet you properly, I’m Hecate. Goddess of the underworlds, and the crossroads that lead the way to all afterlives. And a few other things, I have a side gig as the Witches’ Goddess too.” Kai and Ash shake her hand and bow their heads, it felt appropriate. She smiles at them. “Yes, I like you. I’m glad Sol vouched for her to be your Mates.” Kai blinks and looks at Sol. He’s rubbing the back of his neck nervously. Kai stands and bows deeply,

“It doesn’t.” She turned and walked towards the garden, touching the plant, touching them with such tenderness. “There was once someone who wanted to control her own fate,” the Sage said. “Her name was Elyxia, the Mistress of Death.” I blinked. “Mistress of Death?” I repeated slowly. “Like… actual death? The one that kills people and takes them to the afterlife? Or is that, like, a nickname?” The Sage gave me a look that made it clear she wasn’t joking. “Yes. Actual death.”
