My fingers fluttered through the pages until I found what I was looking for. "This spell is designed to bind one's mental pathways, making them invisible to those who would seek to trespass," I said, my voice taking on a teacher-like tone. We spent the next hour, under that blanket of stars, reciting incantations and forming protective circles around Crystal, drawing upon the latent power of the forest and the steadfast shine of the moon.

“To me.” He came closer again, watching her carefully. “What do you remember?” Liara shook her head, frustrated. “Nothing clear. Just… a scent. Smoke. Lavender. And someone saying my name in a way that didn’t feel safe.” Asher’s eyes darkened. “You think it’s the Delarcos?” She swallowed. “Maybe. Or someone else entirely. I took a deep breath and read the spell. The letters glowed brighter, lifting from the page like fireflies. They circled me and the dragon. My chest burned. “Ahh—!” I cried as the energy rushed into me.

I repeat and sprinkle herbs in another candle. I hold my hand over Scott. The energy coming off of him is manic, vibrating like mad. The spell is working. I have one more candle to invoke with the herbs. “Tolle quode est, et mutare eam.” The flames rise, and a blue band of magic forms from each of them, circling around us. I grab the potion vial, pull out the cork, and hold it over Scott’s head. “Tolle quode est, et mutare eam!” I dump the potion on him, and the flames go out. The smoke wafts over, circling Scott much like the energy did the first time I cast the spell.

“Oh, my Goddess. Bronx, that’s when I ordered Leticia to cut out your eye.” Bronx kisses my hand. “Put it all together Kas. What book?” I close my eyes again and think back. A hazy image of a heavy tome being wrapped in a thick leather bag, a man bowing his head as he accepts the bag from my hands. I recite a spell. It is a combination of protection, glamor, and concealment. He recites it back to me and his face becomes unavailable to my eyes. I watch him take the precious package into a portal, disappearing into thin air.

I suggest as she tries to regulate her own breathing. “Fix what?” She responds holding her hands firmly on the table. “The sire bond! If you let Brett mark you…the pull to Ash will end.” She moans at me and rolls her eyes. I whisper a spell under my breath making it look like I was sipping tea. This particular spell is to make someone feel at ease. Her eyes glow gold for a slight second as the spell takes its hold. She takes a deep breath in before she starts to unload her young person angst, which informs me that the spell has worked.

The same heat spread from my hands to my entire body. The bubbling grew more intense, and thick steam rose high into the air. This time, the scent in the air was not that of metallic blood, but of lilies, geraniums, and fresh leaves.
