Gargoyles with twisted, screaming faces crouched on every corner. Their eyes glowed an ominous red.

The Blackwood estate looms against the afternoon sky like something from a gothic novel—all weathered stone and sweeping gables, surrounded by ancient oak trees whose branches scrape against upper windows when the wind blows. I stand at the wrought-iron gates, second-guessing my decision to come alone.

He just looked back out the window as we turned onto a private road that wound upward into the mist shrouded hills. ​Blackwood was nothing like the glass and steel penthouse. It was a sprawling, Gothic revival estate made of dark stone and ivy that looked like it had been clawed into the side of the mountain. It looked ancient, imposing, and deeply lonely. As the gates creaked shut behind us, I felt a strange shiver crawl down my spine. This wasn't a home, it was a monument to a legacy that had claimed too many lives already.

Midnight in the modern metropolis carried with it a chill that no streetlamp or neon glow could dispel. Beyond the polished sidewalks and glass towers, hidden beneath layers of ancient stone, stood a sprawling Gothic palace: its spires carved with gargoyles that scowled into the darkness, its walls veined with moss and lit only by flickering torchlight. Inside this secret stronghold—the council hall of the vampire clans—the air was heavy with incense smoke and the slow, persistent drip of water from unseen fountains. Crimson draperies, brocaded with silver thread in patterns older than any human chronicle, framed tall, narrow windows that stared out like watchful eyes onto the sleeping city.

Haven had no idea what she was getting herself into. As we stepped into the castle's interior, I was enveloped by an atmosphere of somber, gothic grandeur. The black stone walls seemed to absorb the faint candlelight, casting long, ominous shadows across the floor. The ripped curtains, like dark, tattered veils, hung in rows along the windows, filtering the moonlight and casting an eerie, otherworldly glow over the space.

We pulled over finally as we slowed down as we drove into a cemetery and right now, I saw the fear that subdued her curiosity. We drove for a while as we finally got to the garage at the back of the small cathedral. The shrieking sounds of ravens could be heard and it wasn't a great view from the garage as most of the trees were barren. Just their branches and crooked shape and it was a full moon night as well. The ambience was smokey and candles lit up the back of the cathedral. And in the four corners of the cathedral stood sculptures of a winged werewolf with horns as well, giving it a more gothic look.

Charlie chuckled and said seriously, “Wife, to tell you the truth, I don't even know what gothic style is.” Claire laughed and said, “Gothic style is mainly the architectural style of the German people from Western Europe. You must have heard of the Western gothic cathedrals, monasteries, castles, and so forth. There are those particularly tall, exaggerated buildings with cold stone architecture. Later, it was gradually transformed into gothic literature, gothic music, gothic dressing, and so on. I also only learned about this when I was studying design. So, it is actually normal for guys not to be aware of all this.”
