Sharon’s POV The wind was cold and bitter, carrying the scent of damp earth and sorrow. Gray clouds rolled over the horizon like a curtain being drawn shut, and the low growl of thunder trembled in the distance. I stood still, my hands clasped tightly before me, as Morris’s men lowered Lilian’s body into a shallow grave. The graveyard was quiet, eerily so. It was not the kind of place anyone came to mourn. The air here was thick with disdain, the ground littered with crooked headstones that bore a single word etched into their surfaces: Traitor.

The graveyard was up on the hill. As soon as they arrived, Cassian first noticed six black coffins strewn haphazardly across the hillside. Then, he saw several freshly dug pits, along with a few funeral wreaths, and some other things scattered everywhere. The whole place was a mess. "Mr. Gulley, did all the villagers who died get buried here?" Cassian asked. "Yeah," Darren replied. Cassian circled the coffins and the pits, pacing back and forth as he tried to find even the faintest trace of a clue. After half an hour, he still hadn't found anything of value.

Later, behind the rose curtain, Maya opened the other notebook. Not the base notebook. Not the one anyone could request under the false and still-unresolved belief that there was a council. The older one. The private one. The one that had started after Riley’s, when she had come back from seeing Dex laugh with Cara and turned heartbreak into inventory because inventory had the decency to be useful. Near the back, under a date from the first life, she found the horde entry. She had written it in short lines. Bad handwriting. Too much pressure. Words dug into the paper like she had been trying to carve her way out.

I couldn't help but shiver every time I remembered back to what those voices had said. Hayden was dangerous. In every way. And why wouldn't he be? I wasn't supposed to die that night. This wasn't supposed to happen. That accident happened because he came in the way! Lord of the Dead. That's what the voices called him. So, I tried dwelling in those thicks, old books, trying to find something useful. Except, the only language they were in, wasn't English. And the words written on those rough papers made no sense to me.

And find out if there was any way to fix it. As she drove, Caitlin thought again of the rare books she had found in her library. Most of all, she that of that one rare volume, and its torn page. She thought of its ancient ceremony, the one in Latin, with its cure for vampirism. She wondered again if it was real. Was that just passed down from folklore? An old wives’ tale?

I turned away from them, deliberately flipping through the open books to avoid accidentally closing any of them. “Hey, it looks like there’s a missing page,” I said, pointing to a navy blue tome in front of me. The pages had yellowed with age, and the writing was a deep chocolate brown. “This page mentions a cemetery a few miles from the estate.” I wondered aloud, “Could the Gomez family be buried there? Maybe someone searching for Anastasia encountered trouble.” “Sure, I’m ready to go,” Frederick said, his voice steady with determination. He wasted no time, heading straight to the foyer and grabbing the keys to the sport bikes from the hook. He tossed a pair of keys to me with a casual flic

Any sensible person would think they could easily plan something evil. Because of that, I spent most of my time in the library. Sometimes, I was not reading but looking through the vast catalogue and picking out the books that sounded interesting. That afternoon, I had piled up twenty books on the table. I was still looking for more when the door opened and Leilani walked in. It was almost lunch time so I figured she had come to invite me for it. “Hello,” I said. “Hey,” she said, picking up one of the books on the table. It was The Graveyard book by Neil Gaiman. “This looks like a children’s book.”

Daniel and Ornais were completely engulfed in their conversation to realize that Greed had made it a point to catch up with them. “Hey, we’re going out for drinks to celebrate the successful collection of Abigail’s soul.
