My astonishment must’ve shown on my face, as the woman’s lips stretched into a mocking sneer. “What? Surprised? Did you think I couldn’t do anything to you just because you’re Alpha Malivik’s daughter?” I didn’t. I just never saw that coming. The encounter with the vampires and the evening incident rattled me to the core. I lowered my hand and looked around the hall. There were over ten Lycans in the hall, Caira Mirza and Raed Basil included, and none of them spoke out to knock some sense into the head of their unreasonable Luna.

Like someone else was speaking. “Lunar witch power isn’t like normal magic. It doesn’t come from the earth or the moon or any external source.” He finally met my eyes. “It comes from you. From your life force. Your soul.” The numbness cracked slightly. Let in a trickle of cold dread. “Every time you use it,” he continued, “you’re burning yourself up. Piece by piece.
