The Hero Laughs While Walking Romane & Geschichten

The man marched up to me and, to my surprise, burst into a peal of mocking laughter. Did you hear her, men? She is very thirsty. I think we should give her some water, isn't it? His sarcasm dripped off every word he uttered. They cheered loudly like cavemen, clamouring for some action. He left my side briefly and returned with a small bowl filled with liquid.

"Haha!" Gold family's Patriarch, Eric, burst out laughing, as if he had never heard such a funny joke. The surrounding spectators couldn't help laughing at Lucas' words. Surrounded by hundreds of Gene Fighters, Lucas was still so arrogant, which surprised them. Lucas shook his head as he mobilized the Hundred Heavenly Steps! "Swoosh!" She let a single tear fall down her face, a perfect bit of acting that made Lucas let out a soft laugh of pure, evil triumph. Lucas threw his head back and laughed, the sound echoing through the trees and making the birds fly away in a panic from the branches above. He felt like a god standing there on the bridge, believing that he had successfully poisoned the bloodline of his enemies and ensured his own victory for a thousand years.

He whispers. Through the ether I walk around until I am standing right in front of him. I look to his hands to see if he has a phone, but he isn't holding anything. It looks like I just followed some freak who needed to talk to his self. Not wanting to waste more time I step around him to make my way back to the camp. However, something makes me halt when he laughs. This definitely isn't a good laugh.

My senses refuse to settle, like my body is bracing for something it already knows is coming. Lucas walks with his hands in his pockets, shoulders loose, humming something under his breath that I do not recognize. Jake is beside him, posture easy but alert in the way only he can manage. They are a couple of steps ahead of me when Lucas suddenly turns around, walking backward without missing a beat. He flashes me a grin that is pure trouble and then lifts his hand, showing me his middle finger with pride. I snort despite myself and shake my head. Idiot.

My hands flew to my mouth as a gasp escaped me. He didn’t look up, too focused on the task at hand. Slowly, carefully, he moved his left foot forward, following the same process. Another step. And then another. By the fourth step, his breath came out in a shaky laugh. He stopped, gripping the bars tightly, his chest rising and falling as he caught his breath. “I’m doing it,” he said, his voice filled with disbelief. “I’m actually walking,” he added taking another shaky step I couldn’t stop the tears that filled my eyes. They blurred my vision as I clapped my hands together, unable to contain my joy.
