POV: Maya Castellano Two things happened on the fifth day. The first was that she finished the novel. She’d been reading in pieces since the first night. An hour before sleep and twenty minutes over breakfast while Kofi answered emails across the table with the comfortable silence of two people who had stopped needing to fill space. The woman in the book did the brave thing on page 247 and then spent forty three more pages learning to live inside having done it. Maya read those forty three pages slowly.

Everything she'd built and rebuilt and rebuilt again was right there on the page in her own handwriting. She would read it in just a minute. She leaned back against the headboard. Just one hour, she thought. One hour and then she would think clearly and finish the plan and be ready for tomorrow. Her body needed one hour and then she would have everything under control. The notebook stayed open on her lap. The warmth moved through her steadily, unhurried, filling in every cold and tired place she'd been carrying around for weeks without letting herself acknowledge it. Her eyes closed. Just one hour, she thought again.

She had slipped it in her bag when Winona left. One could never be too sure, but Greg did not look like the kind who blatantly consumed pornography. Perhaps there was something in the novel that caught his attention. Carrie should at least give him the benefit of the doubt. One hour passed by and I was losing my hope as only two books were remaining. Only twenty minutes and I went through the remaining two books. My heart was saddened when I did not find the cure. With an angry growl, I kicked the shelf. And a small leather book fell down. Frowning, I took a look and flipped it.

She dropped her forehead onto the desk, whispering weakly: > “God… what do I do now?” A tear fell onto the paper beneath her hand, then another, blurring the ink as she muttered between shaky breaths: > “Twenty-four hours… only twenty-four…” The clock ticked steadily in the corner of her desk — each second pushing her closer to the end. --- Hours passed painfully slow. By now, the lights on the upper floors were all out, except for one — hers — a lone glow in the dark, flickering like a candle fighting the wind. It had been six in the evening when she sent the email.

Lyra's POV The forty-eight hours before we moved were the kind of hours that had a different texture from ordinary hours, denser, more aware of themselves, the way hours felt when you understood that they were the last of a particular thing and that what came after them would be different from what came before.
