Danger. I turned. And there she was. The librarian. Standing at the door, her frail frame outlined by the torchlight. Her eyes wide, mouth parted in shock. I stiffened, caught mid-theft like a pup with blood on his muzzle. “Well,” I said dryly, closing the book with exaggerated calm. “This is awkward.” Her lips trembled. “W-who are you? What are you doing...” I lifted a hand. “Shhh. I’m the friendly neighborhood bookworm. Here to… improve my literacy.”

“Okay? That’s an interesting subject. Lucky you, though. We do have a section on folklore and supernatural phenomena. Follow me, please.” I followed her down to a quiet aisle lined with dusty tomes. I never liked libraries. The silence and dust always made me feel trapped, but today I have no choice. I need answers. I watched the librarian pull a thick, leather-bound book from the top shelf and hand it to me. "Here, Ma’am. This might help," she said with a small smile. I nodded. "Thank you." I retreated to a darkened corner of the library where I can work undisturbed. I flipped through the pages, scanning the faded text until one passage caught my eye.

The cavern was a chaos of blue light and ozone. The "Librarian" scrambled back, clutching his charred hand, his face twisting from a mask of aristocratic calm into one of frantic desperation. He had spent decades playing God with the lives of children, but he had never accounted for the one variable he couldn't control: a woman who had been underestimated for far too long. "Kill them!" the Librarian shrieked, but his voice was drowned out by the thunder of Sarah’s Vanguard team.

Nothing came out, her throat packed tight with sand. In the mirror, the Librarian tilted her head. Her hair—white, and too smooth—flowed more like water than anything human. “They can’t hear you, Maya. I put a veil over this room. To them, you’re just washing up. To me, you’re an open book.” Maya grabbed the nearest thing she could—a heavy glass candle from the counter. Her grip went bone-white. “Get out of my head. I’m not some experiment. I’m a person.”

A portal into a world I’d only ever read about in books. Now, I found excuses and gaps in my timetable to sneak in here. The only place where the whispers and the glares stopped, where I could just shut my brain off in peace. “Hale!” The librarian’s voice made me jolt. “You need to leave.” She was an older lady with greying hair and large spectacles that magnified her hawk like eyes. She reminded me of the librarian from Monsters University. “Yes,” I said quickly, scooping the thick history textbook in my arms. “I’m leaving. Just putting this back.”

Mira grabbed my arm and yanked me behind a taller shelf, both of us squished together like sardines, her fake mustache tickling my cheek. “Shh,” she hissed. The footsteps stopped right next to us. I could see the edge of a cane tapping the floor and then this soft, raspy voice that belonged to Sable Reed, the blind librarian who somehow always knew exactly where you were even though she couldn’t see shit. “Students,” he said, calm as hell, “this section is for advanced research only. If you’re not here for a specific title, I suggest you move along before I start reciting the overdue fines policy aloud.”

I suggested, already forgetting about the creepy thing that just happened. “It’s in the opposite direction, let’s just ask the driver to take us there” We walked to the parking lot, instructed the driver and he drove us to the library. Thirty minutes later, we arrived at the library. “What book are you looking for?” The librarian asked once she saw us searching through the shelves. “The hidden reality by Brian Greene” Pearl replied. I couldn’t care less of what the book was all about, so I went through the shelves where romantic and erotic books that’ll fuel my fantasies more, picked one and borrowed it together with the whatever that Henry had needed.

The library was Elies’ sanctuary, a quiet haven where she could escape the chaos of the school. Rows of neatly stacked books and the faint scent of paper created an atmosphere of peace. It was the one place she felt truly invisible, away from the prying eyes of her peers and, more importantly, Damien’s relentless antics.
