Her fingers clenched tighter around the hilt, blood slicking both their hands. Her eyes burned into his, fierce, unyielding — as though letting go would make her weak again, prey again.
“I can’t,” she whispered, the words breaking, raw.
“You can,” Dante pressed, his forehead nearly brushing hers, his voice low and urgent. “It’s done. He can’t hurt you now. Let it go — for me.”
Her jaw trembled. For one suspended breath, the world held. Then her fingers loosened, the blade sliding free into his palm.
