Then voices drifted in, low and ancient, layered over each other like wind through dead trees.

I spun toward the sound, or tried to. Shapes flickered into view then—tall silhouettes made of starlight and shadow, seated in a loose circle around me. Seven of them. The Council. Faces blurred at the edges, eyes glowing faintly silver, mouths moving without lips. The Collector of Souls stood tallest among them, cloaked in midnight, holding a long staff topped with a crescent moon that pulsed like a dying heart.
