I was waiting for Lianne in their living room because she was just coming home from school. Her parents are not here because of a business trip, so I am with their maids. Later, Cassandra came in, and it looked like she had just gotten back from work because she was still in business attire. "Good afternoon, ma'am Cassandra. Do you want to eat? I'll cook you something." "No, thanks. I'm full. I ate earlier before I went home." I just stared at her as she happily talked to their maid. When our eyes met, she just nodded and went upstairs.

My tears are running down now. “You, Cassandra Davis: a boring, insecure, ugly, with nothing but plain face and body . You, Cassandra Davis, who doesn't even know what she wants in life, who she is, think that you can make me, the great Justin Black, happy?” And he and everyone continued to laugh while my tears turned to full blown crying.

Cassandra stroked her hair, “Go to bed.” Selena stood, putting her arms around her neck. She stood on the tip of her toes, her mouth pressing onto hers deeply, “I already miss you!” She released her and once she was gone upstairs, Cassandra grabbed her laptop to check the test reports of her patients. Diving into her work was the only way she could take her mind off her now. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Like the building itself was holding its breath. "Cornelius," I called out. Stone scraped against stone. The sound echoed through the vast space. Then the gargoyle appeared between the shelves. His massive wings were folded against his back. His eyes glowed that familiar amber in the dim light. "Assistant Professor Cassian." His voice rumbled through the library. "Or should I say Prince Cassian…What brings you here at this hour?" "I need to ask you something." I moved closer and looked up at where he perched on one of the upper shelves. "About soul wounds."

Cassie asks. They go over to the bookcases, and they all started looking for books that could have something on the relic but there was just a slight mention of it or a paragraph. But no pictures or anything that matches anything in the publications. Cassie goes back over to the bookcase and notices a book up high. She grabs the ladder and goes up it to get the book. "Cassie Be careful, you could fall." Nathan said going over to her helping her down. "Let me look in this book," Cassie said.

I stood with a chair in my hands and stared at the empty doorway until the present room returned around me—bright, noisy, occupied by a different man in a black cassock. By midday I was carrying a box of the new priest’s books toward the parish library. The cardboard edge dug into my palms. Dust and old paper rose when I shifted my grip. Inside the library the air was cooler, polished, familiar. I set the box down and began shelving. That was when I saw them: the same volumes Cassian had borrowed and returned in the early hours before he vanished, spines aligned with bureaucratic neatness. I knew those books, They were the same books Mr. Halden had told me Cassian returned in the early hours

Dim overhead lights cast long shadows between the rows, and the air carried that comforting, dusty scent of old paper and leather bindings. Lila Harper had worked the late shift at the circulation desk for three semesters. At 29, she was the youngest full-time librarian on staff, with sharp hazel eyes, shoulder-length chestnut hair often twisted into a loose bun, and a body that her modest cardigans and knee-length skirts couldn’t quite hide. She knew every quiet corner of the building, including which sections offered the most privacy after 9 p.m.

Still, what I learned shocked me. Harrison and Cassandra escaped. I could not believe Gideon let them get away. They ran like the cowards they are, Nyra said. I learned that Cassandra fled with Harrison and that her parents died during the war. When they realized they were losing, they ran, and they were still out there. That terrified me. I also learned that my favorite teacher and the librarian were among the dead. They were the ones who made my school years bearable. Their deaths hurt more than I expected.

The note said he’d be back soon. But soon felt like forever. That night was my shift at the library. I went through the motions—clocking in, grabbing the cart, heading to the third floor. Jonas was there, sorting returns, and we chatted about nothing as usual. The place was quieter than the night before, just a few stragglers buried in books. No sign of Cassian. No mysterious man in the corner. I let myself relax a little, the routine soothing the raw edges from last night.

Cassie The next morning I’m in the library returning a book I finished reading last night when I couldn’t sleep. The library is massive, two stories tall with built-in shelves that stretch all the way to the ceiling and one of those rolling ladders attached to a rail so you can reach the top shelves. There are reading chairs scattered throughout, deep leather things that look like they’ve been here for decades, and tall windows that let in streams of morning light. I’m tucking the book back into its spot on one of the lower shelves when I hear voices coming from deeper in the room, near the reading area by the fireplace.
