Brandon straightened up with a completely straight face. The librarian looked up from her desk. “Sorry,” I said. She looked at us over her glasses with the expression of a woman who had seen everything and was tired of all of it. “This is a library,” she said. The two words carried the weight of an entire lecture. “Yes,” I said. “Sorry. We’re leaving.” Brandon pressed his lips together and I grabbed my bag and followed him toward the back of the library where the tall shelves began, row after row of books stretching toward the far wall, the kind of section nobody came to unless they were specifically looking for something that had not been touched since 2004.

I demanded, my muscles coiled for a strike. ​“I am the Librarian,” the man said, his voice a dry whisper. “And you, Thorne, are a very unexpected variable.” ​“The Harvesters are gone,” I said, stepping closer. “The Seed is destroyed. Whatever you’re waiting for, it’s over.” ​The Librarian let out a soft, rattling laugh. “Over? No, Alpha. It is merely resetting. You think the Bone City was the only one? You think the First Architects were the only ones who tried to play god with the soil?”

The lift carried me to the fourth floor. I walked the corridors with deliberate purpose, keeping my head down. Through swing doors, I caught glimpses of the newsroom—desks cluttered with paper, phones ringing, voices overlapping. Every so often, my leg stiffened, locking momentarily before swinging forward again, as though braced in a splint. The librarian was in her sixties, with dyed hair and half-moon glasses hanging from a chain around her neck. A rubber thimble covered her thumb, used for turning pages. Her desk was surrounded by an unlikely collection of cacti.

Inside, the librarian was waiting. He was impossibly old — his hair long and white as bone, his eyes dim but alert. His name was Eldritch, the keeper of the archives, said to have served three Alphas before Kilian. He didn’t seem surprised to see her. “I wondered when you’d come,” he rasped, his voice echoing softly off the stone. “They always come when the world begins to burn.”

I stiffened, caught mid-theft like a pup with blood on his muzzle. “Well,” I said dryly, closing the book with exaggerated calm. “This is awkward.” Her lips trembled. “W-who are you? What are you doing...” I lifted a hand. “Shhh. I’m the friendly neighborhood bookworm. Here to… improve my literacy.”

Its movements were dry and rapid, a soundless skittering that raised the hairs on Evangeline’s neck. Where its eyes should have been, there were only empty, bone-white sockets, yet they fixed instantly on the intruders. “A Wyrd Librarian,” Selene hissed, drawing a long, slender silver dagger. “They were scholars sworn to protect the archive. They look… petrified.”

Thirty seconds later, the room was silent again, save for the hiss of the gas. "All pages sent," The Glitch said, her voice dropping to a whisper. "The Librarian’s accounts are being frozen by his own investors. He’s officially a liability, Alessandro. He’s 'red' on every board in the world." Alessandro walked back to the terminal and grabbed the "Bridge." He didn't look at the fallen men. He looked at the hole in the wall he had made. "Caro, get to the extraction point," Alessandro said. "The Librarian is no longer the auditor. He’s the one being audited."
