They needed to teach these humans a lesson or they would never stop. In her anger Norma sang a war siren, one that was beautiful and pleasant to hear but those who heard it could not help but feel sad. They did not know what the siren meant as there were no words they could understand but it pulled at their heartstrings making them feel sad and vulnerable. They stopped what they were doing and listened. One would have to be heartless if they did not feel sad when they heard that siren. It was a war cry, Norma chose the siren because it spoke of how blood should spill to cleanse bad deeds.

Grumbling under his breath Tristan turned and stalked toward a grouping of huts in the far side of the bailey. It was the early hours of the morning. The sun just rising when Miernephen heard the rumbling, echoing voice of one of the Water Princes. “Lust…” The Seringue turned bright orange on her arm, searing and hissing. She squealed behind her clamped lips. Sliding over the floor. Waking Zierno. “What’s wrong?” He asked. “What’s going on?” He rolled off his bedroll to scurry over to her on all fours. Seeing she was clearly in pain. Her skin flushed and her gold eyes burning to deep red. She bared her teeth. Hissing and writhing in anguish.

She would ignite a war no one could control. But when she looked across the river at Alexander, she saw a future. A fragile, terrifying hope she couldn’t let go. --- As she walked toward the bank, time slowed down. The icy, relentless water splashed against her boots, testing her strength. Lucien’s hand darted forward, seizing her arm. She sensed the anguish underneath it though his grip was harsh. "Please fight this," he murmured, the anger laced with a deeper emotion. “I lost your mother to their lies. Must I lose you too?”

The boat slammed through a wave. Raiken lifted me toward it. Something caught his leg. He disappeared beneath the surface. “Raiken.” I dived after him. Darkness swallowed the storm noise. A chain wrapped around his ankle, pulling him toward the glowing ruins below. I grabbed his arm. The chain tightened. A voice whispered from the deep. Let him drown again. Raiken looked at me. His eyes changed. For one heartbeat, I saw the throne room beneath the sea. His fingers slipping from mine.

Death wouldn't even compare to what came next. Wind whipped my short-cropped hair. From up high I could see the endless horizon. We’d been chasing rumors of the siren Lirael for weeks. The siren who sang ships to their doom. Men spoke of her like : skin like moonlight on pearl, hair that shifted colors with the sea and a body that could drive a sailor mad. A silhouette broke the surface, Her voice, no longer broken, no longer pained, rose in a haunting melody that seemed to shake the stars themselves.
