My therapist disagreed with me; he sided with Maggie. "Hey girl," Ardith, one of the more experienced nurses on our unit, greeted me as she planted her bags beside me. "Full moon is in a few nights; I'm still recovering from the last one." She chuckled, cracking her knuckles. I gave her a weak smile, "Don't remind me. That night was hell."

I felt happy but deep inside I was always sad. I wasn't able to sleep that night. I kept turning around. The dream I used to have come back. This time I saw his face. His blue eyes sparkled. It had always been him. Mike. He even conquered me in my dreams. He never left me alone. Then, suddenly I was lost in darkness. Pitch black darkness everywhere I looked. But suddenly a beautiful woman came near me. She was dressed in white. Her hair was white as well. She hugged me. She comforted me. "Don't be afraid my child. I am the moon goddess. You are never alone. He is your world." she spoke. A knock on the door woke me up. It was my mom who came to wake me up.

I asked. “Eh, I think they went to meet her family or something. They come back. They always come back. But we don’t have enough men to fight now. I don’t know what they are doing now. Maybe coaxing the witches to help him? He will come back, that I know. When? I don’t know that.” “So this guy, Moon… what’s his story? Why did he want to fight a war?”

I asked. “No one agrees on the details,” Erica replied. “Some say the pack broke a sacred vow. Others say they claimed power they weren’t meant to have. Some say blood was spilled where it shouldn’t have been.” I felt my hands curl into fists at my sides. “And because of that,” she continued, “people say the Moon Goddess cursed this land.” The room felt impossibly quiet. “In ancient days,” Erica said, “things happened here that don’t happen anymore. At least… not openly.”

They laughed, toasted, and sang songs of victory. I smiled and spoke with some of them. A young man from the medical unit approached me with a glass of wine. I asked, “Do you still have the moon charm? You showed it to me once." He laughed softly, looking down. "Ah, that? I don't think I have it... or ever had it?" My heart sank. I moved on to another group—two elderly women and one elderly man, all retired guards. We laughed briefly, talking about the weather and their children. Then I slipped in, "The Moon Goddess must be blessing your retirement, right?"

Though it has been a long time since Moon told me about his mother, I can still recall the name he told me. “She's my sister.” The man answered with a look of awe on his face. “Who would have thought I will meet the little guy once more.” Moon's grip on the man loosened. He let go of the man's hand. “Do you know where my mother is?” Moon asked in a small voice. He looked desperate to know the answer.

"So you're going to tell me who sent you." He laughed. It was a bad sound. Cold. Mean. "You think you're tough? My people have been killing wolves for hundreds of years." "Your people?" Kael shifted back to human. Put on his spare clothes. "What people?" The man looked at both of us. Like he was thinking hard about something. Then he smiled. His teeth were bloody. "We are the Moon Guard." My heart stopped. Those were just old stories. Tales the elders told cubs to scare them. Warnings about ancient times.
