All I can hear is a ticking clock, but I don’t know where it is coming from. “Midnight is coming,” a voice whispers. “Run while you can.” She asks if I can hear that, but I’m not sure what to tell her. “I can, but where is it coming from? We are on a bridge in the middle of the woods.” Valeria holds me tighter. “Kendric, we have to find out what midnight means. There’s something behind it.” I wake with a jolt, unsure of what in the world just happened. Valeria stirs by my side, her eyes wide with panic. “Kendric, were you dreaming again? You mumbled something about midnight and were shouting my name at one point. What was it?”

He was wearing a dark jacket, his sharp blue eyes scanning the empty courtyard behind us. "You're late," Adrian murmured, his voice a low vibration in the quiet night. "Had to dodge the third-floor monitor," Lisa explained, stepping up to the heavy library doors. She didn't use a key. Instead, she pressed her hand against the lock, a tiny, silent spark of purple magic snapping from her fingers. The heavy iron mechanism clicked open without a sound. "In. Quick." We slipped into the massive, dark library. The air inside smelled of ancient paper, dust, and old leather. Massive rows of bookshelves stretched all the way up to the vaulted ceiling, looking like giant maze walls in the dark.

I'd found it my first week, back when I was still learning the campus, still learning who to trust. Turns out, I was still learning. The library was dark, the only light coming from the emergency exit signs and the faint glow of the moon through the tall windows. Shelves stretched into shadows. The air smelled like old paper and dust and secrets. I found a table in the back corner, away from the windows, away from doors. Myles sat across from me, his brown eyes steady, waiting. "So," he said. "You're going to tell me why you're sneaking around the BioMed building at midnight? Or should I guess?"

She stepped inside the room and closed the door behind her. The lock clicked under her fingers. The faint music from the party downstairs felt far away. “This is the last time,” she whispered. Her voice shook. “Before I get married.” Adrian smiled darkly. He placed his phone on the bed beside him. The video kept playing on low volume. The sound of her younger self moaning around his cock filled the quiet room. He reached out and pulled her closer by her wrist. Sienna let him. Her legs felt weak as she moved toward the bed.

The library looked different at night. During the day it played the part of civilized wealth. Grandfather had always warned me to keep away from books late at midnight but he never stated why. I was all alone still pushing my cart through the fiction section, reshelving the last few new books. The emergency lights cast long shadows between the tall shelves. I should have left hours ago, but I liked being here alone. Of course, No one to make awkward conversations with since no one expects anything from me.

But as soon as she got into the living room, the two books were on the table. "Why are these books here?" she asked herself. The last time she saw these, they were in her room, on the bookshelf. She looked around; the place was too quiet. "They must have realized that I left," she whispered. Verena grabbed the ancient books and hugged them tightly. "I have to see what's going on, I need to," she said to herself. It was three in the afternoon, and there's no way that she'd be seeing the moon at this time. She needed a moment before she took a look at the witch's book.

The kitchen was a risky choice and his barn was worse. He would have easily gone to the library if the kind Bridget was still a librarian. He usually spent all his free time there, reading books to ease his mind. Unfortunately, the new librarian couldn't stand him. She didn't even want him anywhere around the block. The only other place he could think of was the cliff and that meant sneaking out. He couldn't even remember the last time he visited the ocean. A feeling of dread came over him when he remembered the last time he tried sneaking out.

“The Breeding Grimoire. Wear nothing beneath your coat. The archives grow hungrier with each night.” As I left the Arcane Archives on unsteady legs, the memory of the living ropes tightening with every moan, Elias’s mouth devouring me on the ladder, and the glowing pages feeding on my pleasure replayed in my mind.
