عرض المزيدThe gates of Blackridge Academy were taller than I expected.
They loomed above me like something out of a story I wasn’t ready to be part of, all iron bars and sharp edges, cold and unwelcoming. Beyond them, the school was built on a dark part of an isolated boundary. Even the sky above it looked dull, like the place had drained the color out of everything.
I tightened my grip on the strap of my bag and exhaled slowly.
“Okay,” I muttered under my breath. “You’ve got this, Zara.”
Except I didn’t feel like I did.
A sleek black car pulled away behind me, leaving me alone at the entrance. No turning back now. My parents had already made that clear when they decided this school was my “fresh start.”
Because nothing says fresh start like transferring to a school you’ve never heard of, filled with students who looked like they walked straight out of a magazine.
I stepped forward, the gravel touching softly under my shoes as I passed through the gates. The moment I did, something shifted. I couldn’t explain it, but it felt like crossing a line into a place where things weren’t as simple as they seemed.
Students moved in groups across the courtyard, their voices low, their laughter controlled. Everyone looked… put together. Perfect uniforms, perfect posture and perfect lives.
Ooh.. they all lived the life I had wanted.
And then there was me.
New, a total novice in the school. I was already being noticed. I felt their eyes before I even looked up.
“New girl,” someone whispered, not even trying to hide it.
“Another one?”
“Wonder how long she’ll last.”
I frowned slightly but kept walking, pretending I didn’t hear anything. If there was one thing I’d learned, it was that reacting only made things worse.
Still… how long she’ll last?
What was that supposed to mean?
I reached the main building, pushing open the heavy doors. Inside, the air was cooler, quieter. The floors gleamed, reflecting the tall windows that let in pale light. Lockers lined the walls, and students moved with purpose, like they all knew exactly where they belonged.
Unlike me.
I glanced down at the paper in my hand, scanning for my class schedule.
“Room 204…” I murmured.
“Second floor.”
The voice came out of nowhere. I looked up quickly, startled.
A girl stood a few steps away, leaning casually against a locker. She had long braids pulled into a high ponytail and sharp eyes that seemed to miss nothing.
“You look lost,” she added, a small smirk tugging at her lips.
“Is it that obvious?” I asked.
“Very.”
I let out a small laugh, relaxing just a little. “First day.”
“Yeah, I figured.” She pushed herself off the locker and walked over. “I’m Lila.”
“Zara.”
“Well, Zara, welcome to Blackridge Academy.” Her tone was light, but there was something underneath it I couldn’t quite place. “Try not to get eaten alive.”
I blinked. “That’s… comforting.”
She shrugged. “I’m being honest.”
Before I could respond, a sudden shift in the hallway caught my attention. The noise dropped just slightly, but enough to notice. Conversations lowered, movements slowed.
It was subtle. But we never stopped. Lila noticed it too. Her expression changed, the humor fading just a bit.
“Speak of the devil,” she muttered. I followed her gaze without thinking.
At first, I didn’t see what the big deal was. Just another student walking down the hallway. Talk with dark hair. Hands tucked casually into his pockets.
But then I really looked. And something about him… felt different.
People moved out of his way without being told. No one bumped into him. No one even tried. It was like there was an invisible line around him that no one dared to cross.
He didn’t look at anyone and didn't acknowledge the whispers. Maybe he didn’t care.
“Who is that?” I asked quietly.
Lila hesitated for a second too long. “That,” she said finally, “is Adrian Cole.”
The name meant nothing to me. But the way she said it? That did.
“What about him?” I asked.
She turned to me fully now, her expression serious. “Just stay away from him.”
I frowned. “Why?”
“Because,” she said, lowering her voice, “people who get close to Adrian don’t exactly have a good time.”
I glanced back at him. He was closer now, passing right by us.
While he passed, his eyes lifted meeting mine.
The look was sharp and cold. Like he was reading something he didn’t like.
My breath caught. Then, just as quickly, he looked away and kept walking. Like I didn’t matter and meant nothing.
I let out a breath I didn’t realize I was holding. “Okay,” I said slowly. “Noted.”
Lila didn’t look convinced. “I mean it, Zara,” she pressed. “Stay away from him.”
I nodded, tearing my gaze from the empty space he’d left behind.
“Yeah,” I said.
But even as I said it, something in my chest twisted. Because for some reason…
I already knew I wouldn’t.
The Great Hall had been completely transformed. The dark, imposing banners of the old High Council were long gone, replaced by vibrant woven tapestries representing every elemental tier and non-magical block living in harmony. Sunlight streamed through the massive stained-glass windows, casting brilliant fractured diamonds of blue, purple, and gold across the hundreds of graduating students.I stood near the front of the stage, smoothing down the front of my white graduation robes. The heavy gold embroidery along the collar caught the light—a subtle nod to the Sovereign core humming peacefully beneath my ribs. It had been two years since the fall of the old regime, and today, we were the first class to graduate from the Unified Academy."Stop fidgeting, you look perfect," a familiar voice whispered from my left.I turned to see Lisa, her bright purple robes matching the excited sparks of violet light dancing playfully around her fingertips. She looked radiant, her head held high as on
The morning sun rose over the valley, casting a brilliant, untamed gold across the frosted roofs of the academy. For the first time since I had arrived, the suffocating pressure of the High Council’s ancient wards was entirely gone. The air felt light, crisp, and completely free. The heavy stone banners bearing the Council’s predatory crests had been taken down from the main gates. In their place, students from every tier—mortal blocks and elite bloodlines alike—were working together to clear the rubble from the courtyard, talking and laughing without the fear that had ruled their lives for generations.I stood on the newly reinforced stone terrace overlooking the grand plaza, my hand resting lightly on the cold iron railing. Beside me, Adrian looked out over the courtyard, his dark hair catching the bright morning light. He had traded his stiff, formal elite uniform for a simple black jacket, his posture relaxed but still carrying the natural, effortless authority of a leader who did
The dust from the collapsed balcony slowly settled over the stone courtyard, but the energy in the air was electric. What had started as a frantic escape into the mountains had transformed into a full-scale revolution. With the High Council’s main defensive ward shattered and the student body fully aware of the extraction labs, the academy's guards completely surrendered. Groups of upper-class and lower-class students worked side-by-side, guided by Lisa and a rapidly recovering Emily, to open the lower dungeons and free the prisoners—including Vanessa’s parents.I stood near the center of the shattered plaza, my chest heaving as the golden light of my Sovereign core slowly receded into my skin. The intense warmth stayed behind my ribs, no longer a volatile fire, but a calm, permanent part of who I was."Zara."I turned. Vanessa was walking toward me through the crowd. Her parents were right behind her, looking pale and shaken but entirely unharmed. Vanessa stopped a few feet away, her
The sound of the heavy iron gates collapsing echoed across the campus like a starting gun. With the perimeter guards pinned down by the sheer weight of my Sovereign core, Adrian, Lisa, Emily, Vanessa, and I marched straight into the central courtyard. The noon sun cast long shadows across the stone plaza, where hundreds of students were already gathering, drawn by the sound of the explosion."Look! It’s Zara!" a freshman student gasped, pointing a trembling finger at us."And Adrian... but look at her hands. Is that gold?"The whispers began to cascade through the crowd, a rising tide of shock and awe. The students didn't run away this time. They stood frozen, watching the faint, shimmering golden vapor that rippled off my skin, pushing the ambient cold of the valley completely away.Headmaster Alistair stepped out onto the grand balcony of the main tower, flanked by the remaining four members of the High Council. Their golden robes fluttered in the wind, but their faces were complete
The emergency tunnel was narrow, damp, and smelled heavily of old earth. Adrian led the way, carrying Emily easily against his chest while I brought up the rear. My hands were still pulsing with a faint, warm golden light, casting just enough illumination on the rough stone walls for us to see wher
The four Council guards didn't hesitate. They lunged forward from the iron catwalk, their hands ablaze with destructive crimson fire and crackling lightning. The narrow stone cavern erupted into a chaotic battlefield."Get behind the glass cylinders!" Adrian yelled, his voice slicing through the ro
The Grand Arena remained dead silent for what felt like an eternity. The giant spikes of solid ice Adrian had created still ringed the stage, glowing with a sharp, beautiful blue light. The freezing fog he had conjured rolled off the platform, spilling over the feet of the students in the front row
The morning sun hit the tall stone windows of the elite boys' dormitory, waking me up with a start. For a second, I forgot where I was. Then I smelled the familiar scent of rain and winter air, and I remembered. I was in Adrian’s room.I sat up quickly, looking down at my arm. The deep scratch from
