"It's a novel, Alessandro," I said, forcing a calm tone, ignoring the frantic pounding in my ears. "Now, you have your distraction. The door is right there."
I gently pushed his shoulder, guiding him toward the door. He offered no resistance, simply holding the book loosely in one hand and letting me push him. As he stepped into the hallway, his eyes met mine one last time.
"Good night, cara mia," he smiled dangerously. "Enjoy your solitude. I intend to spend the night imagining exactly what I'll do to end it when this infernal week is over."
