Nicholas added, glancing at me with a small smile, "it’s not so bad out here. Kind of peaceful, don’t you think?" I raised an eyebrow. "Peaceful until we’re ambushed, you mean." He laughed softly, the sound cutting through the tension like a warm knife. "Fair point." Alex finally spoke, his voice cutting through the night like a blade. "We need a watch schedule. If they’re going to attack, it’ll be late when we’re least expecting it." "Good idea," Nicholas said quickly. "Stephanie, you’ll take the first watch with me. Aiden and Alex can take the second."

The air thickened with bloodlust and fear. “Alpha Joel, stand down,” Rowan ordered, his voice cracking like a whip. Joel didn’t flinch. “Over my dead body.” The tension was a living thing now, pressing in from every corner. Then, without warning, the temperature plummeted. The torches flickered wildly as a familiar voice boomed through the chamber. “Child of the moon and the earth… your trial begins.” A swirl of shadows erupted in the center of the hall. The Watcher emerged, towering and cloaked in undulating darkness. Its glowing eyes swept across the room, freezing every wolf in place.

I slowly walked towards the hospital while trying to fight off my sleepiness, I couldn't let sleepiness win especially since I was transferred to the night shift. I could already see the tall hospital building and the people in the waiting area, the ambulance at the entrance to the ER, and the families crying and taking care of the paperwork for the morgue. "Yhra, is it your shift?" the guard at the table joked at me as I approached for my time card. "Yes, it's my first day on the night shift. It's all of a sudden," I replied then he checked my bag and gestured for me to be okay.

The days turned into weeks, and despite my best efforts to forget, to bury the memory of that night, the universe refused to let me. What we feared the most had come true—the man from that night, the alpha with the overwhelming pheromones, was looking for me. It had started as murmurs in the city, little whispers passed through networks of people who thrived on gossip and connections. I heard it first from Rayle, who had come home with his brows furrowed and mouth set into a grim line.

As those eyes drew closer to me, I realized that it was Simon, the fae that came to warn me the other day.

The doctor states. “Your Mum will give you your watch shortly whenever your heart rate hits 100bpm you need to leave the room to a safe place and take your medication,” he explains. “If you do this, then it is less likely for your rage frenzy to explode,” he says. My Mum grabs my arm and puts my watch on my wrist. It is a cool looking smart watch. “This links up to your phone and tracks your steps, heart rate and sleep.” My Mum explains. “So we know if you have any more rages and how bad they are” she continues.

Loaded like a packhorse, I went back to the kitchen and set about filling the last free space on the clothes horse with the wet clothes from the machine. I was just about to shake out a T-shirt that I couldn't tell which of the brothers it was when I heard the key on the front door. Immediately I spun around to look at the old wall clock above the sideboard. Shortly after five. As far as I knew, there was only one other person besides Nick who had free access to this apartment, but he always worked late into the evening. Was there maybe someone else I didn't know about?
