The guys that pose shirtless scream “misogynist.” The guys that pose with half-unbuttoned shirts and books scream “misogynist in disguise.” We even find one guy who would normally be exactly my type, a homebody who’s not too muscular or too pretty. I stare at him for a few seconds, willing something to come to life and make me want to go out with him. Nothing.

He asked as I followed him down a narrow part of the trail where sawgrass cut in close to the trail we were on. “I don’t know how to be out in the open around people, I’m an awkward mess of a human being,” he snorted. “We aren’t exactly known as the most popular people around here, we know a thing or two about being outsiders, being excluded, being looked at as beneath people, we like it that way, so nobody looks too closely but, you’ll be fine, the boys will love you, if they overwhelm you don’t be afraid to tell them to mind their manners or give you space.”

He assumed that Heather’s experiences while living abroad would affect her preferences. However, his descriptions were not detailed enough, and the aspects he had placed emphasis on were peculiar.
