They stood up unsteadily, holding on to each other for support. The conductor smirked. “Fists,” he declared. “Running away to the city, thinking we won’t find you! Take them away!” A Patrolman grabbed one of the sister’s arms and hauled her out. The other followed as if glued to her twin. Svetlana was perplexed: were they really kulaks? They looked human, albeit unnaturally weak and emaciated. “Valya!” one of them wailed, clinging to her sister. “Valya!” the second one responded, like an echo.

She and her disgusting lawyers. What a fool she’d been. For several years she’d watched Louella interact with her team of lawyers and heard the rumors that she was paying them with more than money. Because she knew her sister to be promiscuous to the point of earning the label of nymphomaniac in her eyes, she not only believed the rumors, but she confronted Louella about them. It earned her a slap so hard across the face that she carried the remnants of it for several days, along with a warning to mind her own business.

Polly was a brilliant artist with pieces displayed in the national museum, and Julien's girlfriend for six years now. She was talented, kind, funny, and honestly too good for my brother. I'd told her that multiple times, and she always laughed it off. "Come on." Polly said, tugging me toward the other women. "Save me from these boring conversations about flower arrangements and which country club has the best tennis instructors. I've been dying of boredom." We weave through the garden, past women in designer sundresses holding delicate teacups. They all looked the same, with the perfect hair and fake smiles.

Polaris groaned but Eclipse wasn’t yet convinced. “ Fine. Even if you don’t trust them, let’s work with them to save the mutants” She said. The Sister’s were already grinning in satisfaction knowing Polaris is gradually siding with them. “ Fine” Eclipse gave in. “ But…. Bear in mind that this is for the time being” He snapped, making the Sister’s roll their eyes. “ Since we’ve all agree to work together, what’s the plan?” Polaris asked and a smirk creeped up the Sister’s lips.

Over by the apiary, a female in a white suit and veil is smoking the bees. Another female, Wrenlee’s sister, Annabel, is perched on an overturned bushel basket, picking peas. Their youngest sister, Laney, sits nearly in the grass, shelling the peas and popping at least every other one in her mouth. “Hello, sisters,” I call. They both wave. They’re still shy of me and the other males, but they don’t smell of fear anymore, and that’s a blessing.

Of course such alliances are strong for as long as they are useful to those with the most to gain, but the two packs had co-existed peacefully for many years, and there wasn’t anything to suggest a change in that relationship. The three sisters arrived at the party and were immediately overwhelmed by the sight of everything before them. Nora, of course, was at once entranced by the soft, twinkling lights, hung as if by magic, throughout the tents. Thousands of flowers lined every available surface that wasn’t laden down with delicious foods, and delicate music filled the empty spaces, coming as if from nowhere, as they couldn’t even see a band for all of the people in front of them. I remember when she used to drape herself all over me when we were younger. I guess she has outgrown that now. "So I heard you and Aiden are partners on this project," Sarah says, looking back and forth between us. "That is right," I reply. “Blacksmith is my partner.” Sarah frowns, her eyes flicking from me to Aiden. "I must say, it is kind of unusual to hear you call him 'Blacksmith'. It is distant and formal, but I guess that's just your way." She rambles.

I greet Natalie with a smile, she pulls me into a side hug. "Thank God you are back," she says to her son, "I am too lazy to cook plantain pottage." Erin and Edwin are not at home. They went for a birthday party at a neighbour's. Jacob is not around either, he went out telling no one where he was going to.

They looked exactly as they had on Pollepel, identical brother and sister, startlingly attractive, they still looked to be maybe 16. “Those two,” Polly said. “They’re always sparring. Peas in a pod.” The twins, sensing someone’s presence, stopped and walked towards them, breathless. They looked at Polly in confusion, clearly wondering who their new guest was. “I know, it’s not often that we get visitors,” Polly said, “but this one is special. Caitlin is her name. Please make her feel welcome. She saved me from some miscreants in Venice. We owe her one. Well, I owe her one, anyway.”

Trees surrounded this place - the heart of Polonias. Polly's Paradise. That was what I wanted to call the place. Beyond the physical beauty was Polly herself. My sister. Her sweet disposition radiated around her. She belonged here. That much was obvious. Maybe it was because it was part of her. Then there was Leo. We were nearly strangers. He didn't love me any more than I loved him, but this wasn't about love. It was about magic, and it seemed our magics bound together would save Polly. I needed to go through with this.
