Feral Claim
The little body wriggled, licking at my chin, its tiny tail wagging like I was its entire world.
“You’re the only one who won’t lie to me,” I whispered, holding it close as I laid down on the bed.
Exhaustion dragged at my limbs, and before long, I curled into the bed with the puppy against my chest. The steady rhythm of its breathing lulled me under.

I woke to emptiness.
The space beside me was cold, the sheets bare. The puppy was gone.
My chest seized, panic shooting through me. I scrambled off the bed, calling its name — though I didn’t even know if it had one. My voice shook as I searched the corners of the room, under the bed, every inch. Nothing.
