" Raven thought about it all night. Then the idea of revenge took root in her mind. She crept into the kitchen and turned on every gas burner. Then she shut every door and window. Finally, she flicked a lighter in the living room. Just as Margaret had said, Raven really did start a fire. Only, she had not expected the gas to explode the moment she sparked the lighter. So when she pressed down on it, everyone in the house was blown away along with her. Not a single member of that pack survived. THE END

I felt tears stinging my eyes as Raven lay motionless in my arms. She was breathing, but her heart was still racing. Her eyelids started to flutter, then she slowly opened her eyes. “Raven, I’m so, so sorry. Please forgive me. Do you need me to take you to the clinic?” Raven did not say anything. She just lay there staring at me. Which I think was even scarier than when her eyes had been closed. But as my gaze roamed over her face, her lips stretched into that beautiful smile that I love. “Will it always be like that?” She asked as she licked her lips.

Raven slammed the door closed and went directly to Brienne's room. He took a deep breath, set aside his conversation with the elders, and knocked on the door. "Darling," he called as he slowly pushed the door open. "Hi, you're back early. Is it already done?" Brienne asked and closed the book she was reading. "Yeah, I thought it was important, but I guess I'm wrong," Raven responded, chuckling as he approached her. He sat on the bed and played with Brienne's fingers.

Shopping with Raven turns out to be an entire adventure. No... Adventure isn't the right word. An endurance test. When Raven goes shopping, she doesn't simply buy what she needs. She hunts. She compares prices. She reads reviews. She somehow finds stores I never even noticed existed. By lunchtime we have already visited three furniture stores, a hardware store, two grocery stores, and a place that sold nothing but candles. Candles. Who needs an entire store dedicated to candles? Apparently witches.

“How can you not like them? They’re so intelligent and beautiful. Look at the way his feathers shine a kind of metallic violet in the light.” He made a series of guttural croaks that had Shirley flinching. “Aren’t ravens an omen of death and disease? No offense to your wolf.” Natalie rolled her eyes at the nervousness in her friend’s voice. “For God’s sake, Shirley, it’s only a bird. And Raven takes offense.” “And a scavenger, did you forget that part? Wait, does it only have one leg? And hang on, did it just bark?”

Just as Gia was about to step toward the bed, Raven's overly cheerful tone triggered her suspicions. "That man is more than just sly, Gia!" She thought to herself as she turned her steps toward him. "On the second row from the top left shelf, you’ll see a blue book titled 'If Tomorrow Comes.' Take it and read it to me," Raven said. "Like a bedtime story?" Raven’s request was far from what Gia expected. She moved toward the shelf to grab the book. "You could consider it like that if you want. But it's not a storybook. A friend of mine wrote it. I promised to read it a while ago, but circumstances delayed that."

The burden of her troubles felt a little lighter as they shared each of their nightmares, their fear, and their helplessness. "I was staring at them, and when their eyes spotted me, they started to fly in organized fashion, like controlled missiles, towards me and those were no ordinary ravens. Their beaks were razor sharp; their eyes were blood red and hungry for food." She shivered. "I tried to sidestep the attack, but they went wherever I went." "I found you under the tree and the ravens were–" He closed his eyes as if it was too painful to recollect that memory.

But the others were supremely confident in her capabilities that he had no choice but to capitulate. “Very well,” he said. “This investment group is formed as of right now, pending official paperwork of course. What’s our first order of business?” “How ‘bout a name?” asked Eva. “The merc company Raijin and I formed is called Conspiracy of Ravens. Where we’re from, a raven’s a large black bird that’s ridiculously smart, opportunistic, and tricky. They do whatever it takes to survive, and it kinda represents our modus operandi to a T.”

CHAPTER ONE “The Raven King…” Liana gasped softly. Her heart raced as she stared at the whiteboard. The words felt like music to her ears. This was it, the topic she’d been waiting for all semester. The infamous king who ruled with ravens circling his throne, the one whispered about in bedtime stories and blood-soaked legends. The lecturer finally turned to face the class. “When did this historical story take place?” Before he even finished, Liana’s hand shot up. Her pulse fluttered in excitement. She wasn’t the loud type. In fact, most people barely noticed her, but this….this was her moment.

Ash narrowed her eyes back to her meal. Regardless of everything I am being told, I stood up heading out. I arrived at room 004, Raven's room and knocked at the door. Raven's voice trilled from inside. “ The door is open,” she answered sharply. I exhaled a little and cracked the door handle, pushing it open. Raven was sitting on the bed, reading a book. She removed the book from her face to see who it was. Our Sharp gazes met and Raven, without saying a word, shifted her gaze back to her book, suddenly ignoring me like I was an invisible being.
