The Way He Looked at Me
he says slowly, “…or do I have to start over?”
My pulse spikes.

Before I can answer, the hallway light flickers.
The TV glitches.
And from somewhere deeper in the apartment
A phone starts ringing.
“What ?”
My mind blanks out mid-thought.
No, wait.

“God, yes…”
The excitement slips out of me before I can stop it. Too honest. Too loud in my own head.
“You have to redo it,” I blurt, words tumbling faster now. “I need them connected. Like a set. If they’re separated, they won’t count as three, they’ll just be just be random pieces and that defeats the whole point ”
