The brown long table in front of the librarian’s cubicle was empty, compared to the back tables behind the tall bookshelves that were so full. I hurriedly placed my things there and went to fetch some reference books I could use for my essay. I had to redo the part that was ripped, and it was hard to distinguish which book was it that I used earlier. Not only that, but I had to read every single page of what I had done to connect the words and ideas exactly as they were. I could hear the hushed conversations of the students, the turning sound of the ceiling fan from above me, and books being flipped. Feeling uncomfortable, I took my earphones out and shoved them in my ear to focus.

It was an infinity sign with a howling Wolf's shape in the centre. Strange. Looking up, I move aside the books to feel my heart thud in my chest. There was a book.... behind all the books lined in front. And hope rises in my chest. Extending my hand, I move my hand behind to have my fingers touch something velvety. It has to be it.... Pulling it out, I smiled. Seeing a book covered with red velvet colour. The design I saw earlier, drawn in the centre. Much bigger than the earlier one with the words written on the top.

I ended up sitting on the floor. From my seated position, I actually had a clearer view of the heart. Despite feeling uneasy, I forced myself to look at it. Upon closer examination, I noticed that this bright red heart was pulsating vigorously, with a rhythm similar to a normal human heart. But that wasn't all. If I looked closely, I could even make out a white shape within the heart. This white shape was circular, resembling a large and round pearl.

This is really stressing me out, and I couldn't wait for it all to be over. The eldest among the elders took the books from me. Others gathered around him as they began glancing through the book. They checked from one book, and then they crossed check from the two other books to see if it would correspond. If I were to be a regular human, my heart would be beating terribly by this time. But fortunately my heart wouldn't move an inch crom it's position or make a single noise. The only person that could ever shake my heart would remain Sally, except Sally, no other person, nor any situation would be capable of making my heart beat, or skip.

I press the letter to my chest and I feel the heart thump against the paper like a reply. "I don't know your name as I write this. I don't know your face. But I know you needed a heart and I have one to give, and honestly that's a better love story than most people get. My heart is stubborn, that’s a fair warning. It beats faster when it's angry and slower when it's near lavender and it has a terrible habit of falling in love with people who don't know what to do with love. That might be my fault. Or it might just be the heart. Either way, it's yours now. So make sure you appreciate it and treat it better than I did."

The icy night air filled my lungs, and the quiet darkness began to soothe my frayed nerves. I closed my eyes, savoring the peace that surrounded me. But the peace was short-lived. I felt a small tug on my trouser leg. My first thought was, Who let a pet in here? But when I looked down and saw huge hazel eyes staring up at me with pure, innocent curiosity, my heart melted.

Behind the books, was a black jewelry box with a note wrapped around it. Before she could even reach out for it, she felt herself start to sway and she let herself sit down on the rug in front of the bookcase. She didn't need to read the letter, knowing it was just full of Finn's lies and manipulations. She was convinced that there was nothing that he could write to change her opinion of him and his awful behaviour. Lili told herself, over and over again, that she really didn't want or love this man. Yet, he was stuck in her brain and breaking her heart daily.

I could see it was something big. -I said, "Open it without fear. It's something nice and I think you'll love it," my now boyfriend told me. I opened it very carefully, so as not to break the wrapping. They were books, you could see them clearly. When I took them out of the wrapping paper, I saw that they were law books. I wanted to be a lawyer and the most expensive books were right there in front of my eyes. Now that was the best gift in the world. I was going to read them from head to toe. With so much joy inside I ran to hug him.

The Shape of Loss Thomas opened his eyes with a gasp. For a moment, he couldn't remember where he was. The prison. The war. The City of Echoes. The Heart. Everything blurred together inside his mind. Then the World Tree came into focus above him. Golden leaves drifted lazily through the vast chamber. The roots pulsed with quiet light. And reality settled back into place. He was still inside the Heart Tower. The vision was over. Or at least, he hoped it was.
