It gleamed under the low lighting, deadly and personal. “This one’s small,” I whispered, stepping forward, “but it’s enough to slice your throat open and let every filthy secret you’ve ever whispered spill out onto this floor.”

Now he struck with three hundred years of combat experience distilled into perfect precision. He was faster than Malakai, more skilled than Seraphine. Every strike targeted a weakness, every movement was calculated and deadly. Luna tried to defend, but she was fighting two opponents simultaneously. The guards blocked him with their swords. “They can’t beat him,” Nora whispered. “Call for help,” I signed. Nora nodded, and took a deep breath. She let out the loudest shriek I had ever heard. It was loud enough that both sides of the fight near us paused.

The three reach the manhole cover and there, SpeedBlade uses his sword to pry the cover off. "You made a foolish mistake," Silent says, walking toward me. "A brave but very foolish mistake." "You know," I say, stepping forward and staring Silent down. "For someone who called himself Silent, you should talk a lot. I mean, a lot a lot. Are you sure you have the right name?" "I'm a silent worker," Silent says before raising his arm and firing his blasters. Jumping and rolling out of the way, I run around Silent and throw my shield at him.

I know it as I’m making it. The silence presses in. I hear nothing but my own breathing. Nothing heavy crashing through brush the way something his size should. Then the air behind me shifts. He’s there. Close enough that I feel his heat before I see him. I don’t retreat. The thought flashes sharp and clear, and I ignore it just as fast. I spin and strike hard, both blades driving forward with everything I have behind them. Without hesitation. A killing move.

I swallowed hard and held out my palm. The blade met my skin, slicing through it with a sharp, icy sting. I winced as warm blood spilled into the bowl. Dylan’s blood followed, and then the elder pressed our palms together, fingers locking. Our mingled blood shimmered with a strange, silvery glow. The air around us thrummed as though the room had become a living thing, inhaling with us.
