Even Leo looked thrown off, one hand on my elbow like he expected something bad to happen any second now. I took a step closer to the edge. The air in the hall felt colder suddenly, like whatever was about to happen would crack through the fragile peace we’d spent two weeks building. The man slowly lifted his head. But before I could see his face, everything stilled again. Christian’s voice cut the silence like a blade. “What are you? A mute? Don't make me come down there and make you speak.” But the man stayed quiet. And that silence screamed louder than anything.
