MIRA The mansion sleeps like a beast with its breath held. Rain taps against the windows, steady but sharp, as if the sky itself is warning me to stay awake. I lie in bed, staring at the ceiling, replaying Damian's video in my head, the grave, the roses, his voice. Each detail slices through the fog of exhaustion and plants itself deeper into my skin. I can barely sleep and when I finally drift off, it’s not rest, it’s collapse, and maybe that’s why I don’t feel it at first. The shift in the air, the weight beside me, the cold that slips across the mattress like a whisper.

I snarled. My fist shot out before I even thought about it. Crash. The standing mirror beside my bed shattered instantly. Glass exploded across the floor. For a moment, I just stood there breathing hard, staring at my reflection breaking into a thousand pieces. "Ah..." I looked down at my hand. Blood dripped from my knuckles and onto the floor. The sensation was disorienting—like falling through icy water, the air sucked from her lungs as a weightless pull dragged her deeper. She landed hard on something soft but solid. Gasping, she sat up and took in her surroundings. The ground beneath her hands was covered in shimmering silver grass, and towering trees with metallic bark stretched toward a kaleidoscopic sky.

She turns slowly, and though Lumina can’t see her eyes, something about her expression makes her chest tighten. Then — a baby crying. The sound echoes, sharp, desperate. It's alone, lying on stone, wrapped in a blanket stained with something dark. A fire blazes next. Screams cut through the night, shadows running in panic. The flames twist, reaching for the sky like they’re alive. Then the mirror goes still for half a second. Lumina gasps. And just before more can be revealed — a loud, echoing crack. The mirror splinters down the center.

Lucien flickers in and out of torchlight, a blade in each hand, ghosting through mirrors before they fully form. Seren burns. But even her flame hesitates. Because mirrors do not fear fire. They feed on it. “Fall back!” she calls. “They drink identity, don’t speak your names! Don’t remember too loudly!” Too late. A young hybrid screams for his sister. The mirror echoes him, perfectly. And then eviscerates him with a smile. By the third hour, the ground is a slick mosaic of blood and glass dust. The mirrors crack under force, but never stop smiling. They do not speak.

BOOK 3: Chapter 10: The First Night The air in the bathroom is thick with steam, curling along the edges of the mirror, blurring the lights overhead into hazy halos. The hiss of the shower fades into the background, overtaken by the rustle of breath, the soft slap of skin against tile, the broken cadence of a woman giving in. Her back arches against the sink’s cold edge, muscles trembling, thighs slick and parted, and she’s not holding back anymore.

I stepped aside, gesturing for her to enter. She glided into the chamber, her presence immediately filling the room. Mira was older than anyone I had ever seen in the pack, her silver hair falling to her waist, eyes like liquid moonlight, luminous and penetrating. Her robes swayed around her like mist. Even her steps were soundless, deliberate. “Sit,” she said softly, her voice carrying a weight that commanded attention without force. I obeyed, hands clasped tightly in my lap. My heart pounded as her eyes swept over me, not missing a single detail. She stopped at my gaze, holding it as though she could peer into the deepest corners of my soul.
