You didn't starve to death. I could not take it anymore. "Mom, do you know how I've been surviving this semester? On handouts from my roommate and digging through trash for leftover food! And today, if my advisor hadn't been kind enough to buy me a meal, I probably would've collapsed and ended up in the hospital!" I thought hearing about what I had been through might change her mind. Instead, she let out a scornful laugh. "So what, you're trying to brag to me about your good luck? How you ran into a nice roommate and a nice advisor?

She touched her abdomen feeling the flutter of life inside her and whispered softly,“We are stronger than they realize. And we will survive.”The storm was coming-Russell’s dominance, Xavier’s interference and the Council’s oversight but Giovanni was ready. She had maps, knowledge and instincts. And she had resolve. “It is about learning how to be hit.” My stomach tightened. “What?” Was he going to hit me? “You are human. You are fragile. A single solid blow from the weakest pack member could break your bones.” He said it not to be cruel, but with the same detached tone a mechanic might use to diagnose a faulty engine. “So, you will not be fighting. Not for a long time. You will be learning how to fall. How to roll. How to displace the force of an impact so you can get back up. Survival is the first form of strength.”

Bart whispered. “Only the strong ones survive the battle, Bart. I am not a thief. I am a survivor!”

The crowd erupted in quiet cheers, whistles, claps, and laughter—joy sweeping through the clearing like sunlight breaking through clouds. I found myself smiling so wide my cheeks ached.
