The Whisper Man Novels & Stories

That might as well have said, “Suspicious activity happening here—please sniff around with care.” Linda knocked anyway, her fist pounding the heavy wood like she was trying to wake the dead. When no one answered, she leaned on the buzzer with all the subtlety of a foghorn. The door creaked open just enough to reveal a small man with a potato-shaped nose, a face so pale it could’ve doubled as a flashlight, and ginger eyebrows that looked like they were glued on. He wore a black sweater turtleneck and black synthetic trousers that had distinct shine around the knees.

I did not say anything during the entire thing and just watched her quietly as she put on her show. I wanted to know just how sincere she was during our seven years of friendship. By the looks of it, I was too naive and mistook this venomous viper for a harmless pet. That was why I ended up dying so tragically in the previous cycle. “That’s fine. If you can’t help me, someone else will.” I did not stop smiling and dialed a number. The moment the call went through, the person on the other end asked anxiously, “Miss Nelson, have you managed to contact Joy?”

I was so glad Vanessa was with me because it all just made me uneasy. “This place seems so different at night.” She whispered as we made our way down the corridor to the main steps and started up them. “Who's there?” We heard a man call from upstairs before the figure of a janitor in coveralls stepped into light at the top of the steps. He was an older man with gray hair, large ears and kind eyes. He had laugh line wrinkles that just said he was a good person and despite the initial scare he gave us, it felt good to me that he was in the building with us.

But there was no one there in the room with him. His hand shot up. Clutched the blanket. Gripped it like it was slipping away. ‘Son…’ the voice again. A woman’s voice. Soft and Sad. Crying inside like she needed to be saved. His forehead pulled tight. A frown settled there. His legs curled up a little while his body tensed up. He turned on his sides but the whispers grew louder. He pressed his palms against his ears to cover them, to block off the whispers. But the sound came from inside. Deep inside. Like it lived in him.

As his words faded, a strange man approached me. "Well now, what have we here? A pretty little rogue, all alone?" It was the Alpha of the Grey Wolf pack. His greedy eyes were fixed on my satchel. "I hear you've got some good stuff in there. Come on, let a real Alpha see what you've got." He reached out to snatch my sample case. I jerked back, but he was faster, his hand closing around the handle. "Let go!" I warned sharply. "Ooh, feisty," the Grey Wolf Alpha sneered. "A little she-wolf with no one to protect her should know her place."

My lungs could barely pull in air with him so close. I sighed deeply, trying to regain some control, some clarity. But it was useless. Daimon surrounded me from all sides—with his presence, his touch, his voice, his scent. I was sinking into him. It was then that I heard them. The whispers. They came with the wind, like an ancient lament, almost ethereal, wrapping around us. The temperature seemed to drop for a second, but his heat kept me alive. The whispers swirled around us, spinning like an invisible dance, scraping at the senses, and then a single word echoed clearly:

... Meanwhile, in Whitpalm city. A man groaned when a whip landed on his back. “Argh!” Pain shot through him and blood trickled down his body. “Shut up! Tell us the military secrets. We want to take over and rule this country... Why are you trying to protect them? They sent you here to die!” The man who was wielding the whip yelled, landing another blow on the injured man. He had a Russian accent with tattoos all over his arms. He grinned at the injured man's state, exposing his gold teeth.

I asked him, and he shook his head. " No, it isn't. This is the first I have heard," he confessed, and I noted it down in my head. I intended to look into it further. "Willows wolfsbane is grown by spirit wolves. Could the hunter be working for a spirit wolf?" Sylvester suggested. " Maybe the hunter is a spirit wolf" Robert stated. " That is not impossible." Sylvester argued, " Willows wolfsbane can kill spirit wolves too. All except for Samantha. She is sort of immune to it. No spirit wolf would shoot a poisoned dart. It has to be a human hunter." Sylvester suggested.

Her hands were trembling as she pointed at the man. “Are you okay, Miss?” The man asked her again. “L-Liam!?” Annika said as she stuttered. The man was astounded that the woman knew his name.
