Perhaps. Was it worth it? Yes. With a chuckle, I stood slowly, and the room quieted without command. Even the TV seemed to hush. From my jacket pocket, I pulled a leather-bound book, aged in the way you can’t fake, with corners worn and scent of cedar. I handed it to her without flourish. “What is this?” she asked, eyes scanning me, soft but curious. “Open it.” She flipped the cover. On the first page, hand-written in gold ink, were the words: Three Wishes.

Her eyes go wide. “What did you say?” My heart thuds. This is how our last fight ended. The fight that lost me Lilly. Am I idiot enough to repeat those words? “I said. You. Wish.” Yep. I am. Her lips part on a breath, and my body pulls taut. Her tongue darts out to taste her bottom lip. Like she might be imagining it’s mine. She does wish. Holy shit. She does wish. The realization is a heady rush.

And in its place— Hope. Freedom. Strength. Like maybe… just maybe… I can still move forward. My lips part slightly. The words leave me before I can stop them. “I wish I could have that...” I whisper.

Inside were pages filled with notes from school, thoughts about friends, little moments she didn’t want to forget. And then… there were the other entries. The ones about him. The ones she never showed anyone. With a deep breath, she opened it to a fresh page. Her pen hovered above the paper for a long time. Then she wrote: “I wish he’d look at me like he looks at other girls.” The words felt heavier than they should have. She stared at them for a long time before closing her eyes and whispering them into the dark. I wish he’d look at me like he looks at other girls.

The pages turned themselves, faster, a blur of images: Elena, five years old, watching Javier sign the loan, her tiny hand on his sleeve. Sofia, hiding chemo bags in the restaurant’s freezer, tears in her eyes. Marco, twelve, hacking the city’s traffic lights to keep the power on. Me, proposing by the East River, lying when I said no more wagers. The book laughed, a sound that wasn’t sound but pressure, a weight on my heart. The alley shifted. The rubble became the Hamptons mansion’s marble floor, the smoke the gala’s chandeliers, the ash the warehouse’s crater. We were inside the book, the pages walls, the words chains.

To he that wrote me those letters that made my day and always made me smile. Thank you. Eyes bored into his back and when he turned, he stared into her eyes. One second. Two seconds. Three seconds. I whispered, my voice soothing. I sat down beside her, worry etched on my face. "I wish for a lot of things, Tia," I said, my voice barely above a whisper. "I need time, Tia, time to be able to tell you what's in my heart."

I just whispered, too soft for anyone else to hear: “I wish I never signed that paper.”
