Chapter 6 When we had retrieved the hefty book, we headed back to Max's little house on the edge of Naples. The book was incredibly thick and the pages as thin as Max's chance of success in life. The writing was minuscule making it hard to read the thousands of tiny names and dates of birth on each page. The first 500 hundred pages were hardly legible, although someone had carefully gone over the ink so that it hadn't faded. Hecate Chiaramonti was on the first page, her birth date 1076 BC. That's 3096 years ago making it by far the oldest book in existence.

He does back, almost reverently, while I get down to my knees, and dig it out of the ash and leftover wood. And there it is, in all its glory. Each table had a mechanism that could turn the pages of the book remotely from their seat, mages no longer had to get up from their seat or hire someone to turn pages for them.

I walked into the inner part of the book shop and excused myself after I belched. “This one is Six Thousand Naira”. “If you interrupt mw again, you won’t like what I’ll do to you…” The shopkeeper saw my countenance and left me alone, before going to fetch cellophane bag. He picked up the 2009 Guinness Book of World Records and bagged it, and waited patiently for me to pick another book. I soon picked The Family by Mario Puzo and Carol Gino. I was handing the novel to the shopkeeper, who was already with a calculator, when I saw it. It was a dark hardcover book, with pink and dark designs. I smiled broadly and extracted it from the shelf with both hands.

Chepi says from behind me as her hand gently guides me towards a doorway. "So I've heard." The library through the door is pretty impressive, I have to say. The walls had handmade shelves built onto them, all holding dozens upon dozens of thick, tall books. It was at least a thousand books, spanning across a room the size of an average American classroom I would say. "Wow." I breathe, moving towards the books and running a finger across the spines. I pull out a random book. It's large, probably a foot either way. Made of thick leather binding and heavy, creamy colored pages.

They are like Sheldon Cooper on Big Bang Theory smart, just less annoying. We finish eating, Melanie, Allie and I go upstairs to get ready for bed after a long day of moving, while Liam and Cap blow up the air mattresses for us to sleep on in the living room since we decided it was too late to put the beds together we would just do it in the morning. “Hey guys could you bring three of those air mattresses up here to my room,” I yelled down the stairs. “The girls and I would rather sleep up here together,” All you hear from the guys downstairs was loud grunts. The room beyond took my breath away. Massive. Two stories high. Floor to ceiling shelves along every wall, and arched mezzanines above with even more rows. Spiral staircases of dark iron curled toward the second level. A huge circular desk sat in the middle, empty but polished. A globe that hadn’t been spun in years stood in the corner beside a cracked leather reading chair. Books. Thousands of them. Some were still on the shelves. Others had tumbled into stacks or sprawled open on long wooden tables. Papers, scrolls, and thick ledgers lay like the remnants of minds once hungry for knowledge.

Caitlin, puzzled, examined it, a huge, heavy, leather-bound book, nearly two feet long, and realized it was one of a few books she had not yet read. It was so heavy as she pulled it off the floor and placed it on her thigh. The book must have weighed a good ten pounds, and as she turned the oversized pages, she realized it was a rare volume, hundreds of years old. She could be sent to jail for being here, she realized, for doing all this, sitting here, trespassing, holding these invaluable items, which collectively were worth millions. She knew, having worked with rare books, how much they were worth. They were priceless.

Noble after noble walked towards the area where the maid was and somehow formed a disheveled oval as a group. Crystal was already finished two minutes earlier, in her hand were exactly three books which was at least 300 pages thick per bind. The maid inspected the books which some of the nobles were carrying, distaste was all she could show in her expression as her eyes darted from noble to noble. What bothered her is the fact that most of the girls carried books whose quantity was more than the average suggested by her instructions a while ago. A young maiden carried seven, very thick binds of books that seemed to be really heavy.

The great, iron-bound cover of the Chronicles of the New Era did not sit beneath a glass display in the deepest vaults of the capital, nor was it sealed with a final, unyielding lock of administrative magic. Instead, the massive book rested open on a wide pedestal of unpolished sun-marble in the very center of the Grand Plaza of Genesis. Its pages were not made of paper, but of thick, shimmering sheets of woven light-lines that rippled and turned on their own whenever a new day broke across the unified worlds.
