My fingers twitched, searching, grasping the smooth, cold object hidden at my waist. A sudden heat flared through my hand. I didn’t hesitate. As Thorne’s blade came down, I thrust the crystal upward, screaming through the blood in my throat. “Burn, you bastard!” At first, nothing happened. The crystal lay in my palm, shimmering in the moonlight. Then it flared to life. Bright. Blinding. Blue fire erupted. Thorne recoiled, screaming. His skin smoked and blistered. He dropped his sword, staggering back, clutching his face. His flesh bubbled and peeled, and his robes caught flame.

“But you’ll be gone.” And then I moved. Faster than his eyes could track, faster than the witches could react. My fire took over. No more compromises. No more second chances. No more mercy. I felt it before I moved. The shift. My body became flame incarnate, no longer flesh but vengeance wrapped in heat. My wings of fire unfurled behind me—massive, burning brighter than anything I had ever conjured before. I wasn’t walking anymore. I was gliding, a being of wrath.

The heat seared the air, striking the ground between them like an act of divine judgment. Both men froze, forced apart by the roaring flames.

''Let's make them burn boy,'' I tell him through our mind connection. Thorn chants, ''Burn baby burn.'' I laugh and we lift off into the air. I make him go high and then shoot down to one of the piles. When we are close, I think, ''FIRE!'' and Thorn sets it ablaze. Then we fly past the line of dummies, and I tell him, ''ATTACK!'' Thorn rips them apart with his claws or teeth. I stroke the golden scales on his neck, ''Good job boy.'' I see that the sun is going down so I tell Thorn to go back but I can feel him hesitate.

Heat burst from my chest, wild and unstoppable, fire vomiting out of me in a torrent that melted the nets in a single breath. The ground split beneath me. Scales shimmered across my arms, black through with molten gold, crawling up my throat, down my ribs, until I was wrapped in it. My skin burned, and yet I felt invincible, every nerve alive with power too big for my body. My wings weren’t there, not yet, but I could feel them, ghosting out of my back, stretching wide, ready to blot out the sky. Heat rolled off me in waves that cracked the earth, setting the trees ablaze.
