Imogen breathed out the words, shaking violently on the floor. "You heard that, old man! There's no other time left!" Mauve blurted as soon as Imogen kept quiet, grinning like a basket of chips. Her eyes shone like diamonds seen from afar. "This book is no longer useful! Throw it, burn it, I don't care!" Mauve groaned, throwing guffaws left and right as she excused herself from the throne room.

"Whatever it is, I need to know." Richard took a shaking breath. "Marcus Vale and I were business partners once, a long time before you were even born," he said. "We built a small company together. When it started to succeed, I made a choice that I have regretted every day since. I bought him out of the company for far less than his share was actually worth, during a time when he was going through a difficult period in his life and could not fight back properly. I legitimately almost had a heart attack as I felt my eyes pop and air circulation cut off immediately. How could he not have the book anymore? The cracked vase on the windowsill that I kept meaning to throw away and never did because something about the crack itself had started to feel like a feature. The sweater draped over the back of the chair, the gray one with the sleeve I’d repaired two winters ago, one arm still slightly longer than the other because I had never been very good at that kind of precision.
