Marked by fate
I light the fire, the scent of woodsmoke and matches filling the small cabin, then go in search of Thor.
He’s curled up in a ball on top of the bed, lying on what looks like another sheet. The vacuum bag is discarded on the floor, and he has his nose tucked under his tail, his breathing deep, even, and relaxed.
As I enter the room, though, he cracks an eye open, looking at me, and I start.
Instead of his eyes being their usual black, they are Tobias’s startling sandy-gold colour.
My breath catches as he blinks, and I’m terrified the illusion will be gone when they reopen, but instead, he lifts his head.
