With black tinted windows, it was a perfect cover, even cruising in the mornings. Uncertainty ahead of them, they departed. Tessa watched from the open door. Her heart sank as they got into the Toyota and drove down away from her apartment. Not long after, it disappeared past the hedge-covered side road. When she couldn’t hear the Toyota’s motor anymore, she stared at the horizon, stepped in, and closed the door slowly. The Toyota headed toward the main road. By the time it got into the center of town, the streets were snarled by the last hour evening traffic. It edged out of it, rounded the block, took the left then whipped out into the south superhighway toward AH26.

I saw our car as a blue dot on the map. ​"Marcus, at the next intersection, turn right. Do not stop for the light." ​"The light is red, Elara." ​"It won't be." ​I swiped my finger across the screen, forcing a Priority Green for our lane and a Solid Red for every other direction. As we tore through the intersection, I timed the reset. The moment our bumper cleared the line, the cross-traffic turned green. A massive semi-truck roared into the intersection, T-boning the second SUV with a sickening crunch of metal.

The crooked nature of the road creates oxbows of extra sidewalk and yard space with every curve. The inside of each is planted with green bushes and other shrubs to fill in the voids. The blue Explorer in front of us pulls onto the street and begins to take the first turn. Trey moves L.D. into position, but we wait at the top for the cars in front of us to make it farther down the steep incline. Once the blue Explorer crosses the halfway mark, Trey lets off the brake and we slowly slide into position. "Here we go."

He tossed the spaceship up and down, higher and higher, until it finally slipped from his grasp and clattered to the floor, breaking into several pieces.

And though I didn't want Ryder to fall, I just wanted to scare him a little to stop driving and wait till I passed through first. He slammed into my car, and I lost balance for a few seconds before hitting him again. This time any other hit will send him off the bridge so he stopped. I smirked, before going through. It was a few more minutes before I passed the bridge and into the third stage. I put on my headlights and looked at the towers to see if there were any sparks from it or any loose overhead wires hanging around. I couldn't find any but I slowed down a little when I saw the nails and sharp objects. I swerved lightly to the side to avoid them.

It was a sprawling, kinetic circuit built into the rim of the volcano, manned by hundreds of Resonants tracking the constant, high-velocity flow of the earth's heat. We didn't have to look for Toby. He found us. Before the transport even fully powered down, a blur of silver and slate-grey tore across the tarmac, breaking the sound barrier with a sharp crack.
