"If we follow the river, we can get out of the city without ever seeing the sun. It will take days. It will be dark, cold, and dangerous. But it’s the only path the Emperor can't watch."
"Then we swim," Saoirse said.
"We walk," Tristan corrected. "There are towpaths along the canal. Or there used to be."
He tried to sit up again. This time, he managed it, though he swayed dizzily.
Saoirse sat up with him. She looked at his chest. The black veins had faded to gray, looking like an intricate tattoo of lightning spreading from his heart.
"Does it hurt?" she asked, touching the mark.
"No," Tristan said. He looked at her hand on his chest. He covered it with his own. "It feels... awake."
