Before their very eyes, the beast transformed into a man. “Smoke!” Squealed Sprout. “Or Mirrors,” murmured Hayden. “It’s one of them,” confirmed Titan, reaching for the other beast to cut off its collar carefully with the blade of the Axe pointed away from the creature’s neck. They watched the second beast transform into the twin of Smoke or Mirrors. “It’s them,” said Hayden confidently, nodding at Cory. Cory let her father enter the protective semi-sphere. She covered him with the cloak Hayden had given her. He was shivering.

Was this creature really invincible? By this point, the spider had gotten fed up with Walter’s attacks! A massive chimera‑like **drone‑beast** hunched on all fours, its metal body heaving with slow, mechanical breaths. It was bigger than any drone we’d seen so far—twice the size of the alpha wolf in the castle. Its front half was canine, with heavy plating over its shoulders and neck, a head shaped more like a predator jet than an animal. Its hindquarters were insectile—multiple jointed legs ending in hooked claws, a segmented abdomen bristling with antennae and turrets. Cables ran from its spine up into the beacon’s base, tethering it like a guard dog to a power source.
