“Hey, babe. How was the drive?” They chatted casually. Normal. Domestic. The sound of it made the guilt surge again, sharper this time. Mom had no idea. She trusted both of us. I'm suddenly wishing she were here. "So," Noah says, taking a step toward me. The towel is slung low on his hips, and I can see the muscles in his stomach ripple with every breath. "You’re not jealous." "No. I told you." I wrap my arms around myself, trying to find the words to ask him for money without losing every shred of my dignity. "My mom called." Noah’s playfulness disappears instantly. He leans back against his dresser, crossing his arms over his chest. "And? What does the lovely woman want this time?"

Noah swallowed and turned away from Raven, facing the window and the view, but not truly seeing it. He shoved his hands in his pockets and tried to prepare himself for what rehashing his past was going to do to him, to her. "My mother had a daughter through a previous marriage when she met my dad. Fresh on the political circuit, they got married quickly and had me. Melissa was eight years older than me and spent a lot of time with her dad, so we weren't exactly close. Neither of us harbored any resentment, there was just such a big age gap."

As he stood in the living room with Rhodes, the rest of the Carnell’s family sat on the couches, and for a while, no one said a word. Then Mr. Carnell darted his gaze off Noah and eyed Rhodes, asking, “And you are?” “He’s my father. Unfortunately, my mother could not be here. She is back at home, in the countryside.” Noah cut in, and the fact that he did cuased Mr. Carnell’s face scrunch into a grimace in disapproval.

Watching them as they talked about babies and marriage and their future, there was no doubt in Gio's mind Noah was not making a mistake. Abel's mom was just old school, but to Abel, she could do or say no wrong. Whatever the woman said was golden as far as he was concerned. As much as Abel could kick some ass for the most part, he stayed cool unless provoked. Mom raised her brows slightly. “Oh really?” she said, then paused before adding calmly, “You two should be honest with me… have you done it yet?” I let out a small gasp,my gaze fixed on Noah. “Done what?” Noah asked back like he had no idea what she was talking about.
