Her words were a cold slap in the face, a sharp contrast to the flicker of hope I’d felt moments ago.
“What… what do you mean?” I stammered, my voice trembling. “I… I need to get away from someone.”
She chuckled, a dry, humorless sound that sent shivers down my spine. “From some,” she corrected. “But fate, child, is a fickle mistress. You cannot escape her grasp.”
Fate? Was this woman serious? Or was she just some crazy hermit who enjoyed spouting cryptic pronouncements?
Frustration bubbled up within me. “I don’t believe in fate,” I snapped, a defiant edge creeping into my voice. “I control my own destiny.”
