"But I've lost some of them—and this was one of them." She placed the ace of hearts at the front of its suite. "How many more are you missing?" I asked. The little girl looked through her cards. Her hair tumbled in front her face, and she pushed it back with the palm of her hand. "Well...I'm missing the...two of diamonds, the four of spades, the eight of clubs, and...the queen of hearts." "So, four cards?" "Yes," Marianne nodded. "I always kept them together. But I thought maybe Robert had taken a few with him. We used to play with them together, you see."
