The texts here were forbidden—the kind copied from shattered ruins and burned archives. I ran my fingers along the spine of a book bound in crimson leather. The title had long faded, but the sigil on its cover was unmistakable: The Seal of the Bridge. I opened it carefully, half expecting it to crumble in my hands. The script was old, written in an archaic dialect only partially translated. But one line stood out—etched deeper than the rest, almost as though the page itself had been cut to carve the truth into its flesh: The bridge remembers blood.

I could barely feel the handle of the silver knife still tucked into my waistband. The river carried us swiftly down the canal very far away from the flashing red lights of the train yard. A minute later, the pouring rain suddenly stopped hitting my face. The sky above us vanished and was replaced by a low-hanging roof of solid concrete and heavy iron beams. We were directly beneath the George Washington Bridge. The space under the bridge was vast and incredibly loud. The constant, heavy rumble of car tires on the road above vibrated through the air like a steady roll of thunder.
